Slagging off someone's parenting ability on the basis that they don't talk about their kids on a message board is pretty below the belt, IMO.

I don't think Alien likes my Cleo persona. It seems to create all kinds of pent up aggression hence the need to try to push me into that place he is inhabiting currently. Not happening, I just find it funny.

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

I find it amazing that some folks can't understand that bullying is a real and pervasive problem in schools (always has-been) and that addressing some of the underlying issues that cause kids to see others as "different" or "deficient" can only be a good thing.

Why are you stereotyping gays as wimps, effeminate, and sissies? Homosexuals (and the rest of the LGBT community) come in all flavors, just like heterosexuals. Sometimes, singling people out for special consideration just makes them targets. Kids have a way with minimal supervision of working things out for themselves, and getting over it just as fast. For them, it is a learning process, and most have no clue about their sexual orientation and what eventual lifestyle will be like. When adults intervene, it should be with caution, so as not to make things worse.

Wishful thinking on your part, my friend.

As for the rest - a captain obvious sign is probably appropriate.

There's nothing about what was proposed in the article that amounts to "special consideration" - the way I read it the school is just trying to create a normalised social atmosphere by minimising tensions that result from people perceived to be "different" (which is what bullying tends to be about).

Good. I was worrying about you. I was going to send a couple lesbian friends your way to straighten you out.

I was bullied from 1st to 12th grade. Most of it was psychological, but a lot of it was also physical. The teachers did nothing to help and talking to the bullies just made them attack more, so I eventually responded by kicking their a$$.

Some people may say that violence solves nothing, well... they're wrong. In this case, it was the only language they understood. So once I caused a few bloody noses (and other assorted injuries), they left me alone. Oddly enough, doing all of that earned their respect and I was left alone.

Bottom line: junior high and high school sucks.

I've found that to be the effective strategy in all forms of bullying. Bullying is just taking advantage of someone for your own amusement. In adulthood, it turns into taking advantage of people to get ahead, or because they are lazy. There are people at work who will not do their jobs and pass off their work to other people. Some people will do it for them. If you dont' tell them to ** off and do it themselves, they will keep on singling you out and taking advantage.

In general, I think teachers would prefer to defuse issues before they turn into bullying. I think that's the reasoning behind what they're doing in Alameda.

Most teachers i've known don't really want to deal with it at all.

If they actually deal with the issues, then I'm all for it. I had to use violence.

Unfortunately, that's quite true. All of this occurred in the 1990s, so I was relatively safe when fighting. If that had happened today, I'd get arrested for something stupid like "the potential for a school shooting."

Biff really did deserve that truckload of manure.

I'm sure that's true of some teachers - overworked, underpaid, having to comply with regular performance check ups by government auditors - a lot of them are probably exhausted at having to deal with petty fights on top of everything else they have to deal with.

Bullying it is an issue that is taken very seriously, most schools have some sort of outreach program or counselling facility to deal with it and there are national organisations trying to combat it, which have a presence in schools.
