Hi all,

I have another question on changing or not changing my family name on Koseki. Is it OK if passport (Japanese registered) name is, for example, "Hanako Yamada (Smith)" and my green card's name is "Hanako Yamada Smith"? I wonder if anyone had any issues when you travelled in and out of the US by having two different names.

Ive never had any trouble with it. You will need to bring your marriage certificate showing the name change along to the airport with you.

As long as you put in parenthesis your married name on your passport, you wouldn't have any problem.

A friend of mine who's done the same thing travelled back and forth between the US and Japan many times, but never had a problem.
