Samuel Wurzelbacher, better known as Joe the Plumber, tells TIME he's so outraged by GOP overspending, he's quitting the party. But he also said he wouldn't support any cuts in defense, Social Security, Medicare or Medicaid — which, along with debt payments, would put more than two-thirds of the budget off limits.

Even Joe the Plumber — who opposes abortion and homosexuality and considers America a "Christian nation" — wants the party to drop its "holier than thou" attitude on divisive social issues.

How come I can't find any pictures of Roast Elephant to add to the post?

When Joe the Plumber became the poster boy for McCain's presidential campaign it showed how utterly wrong he got it and how totally out of touch he was.

I don't care overmuch about Joe - except that he seems to have done everything but become a plumber.

Can Joe the Plumber make a long term living as Joe the Media #######?

I guess we'll find out.

I don't know if you've been paying attention to the GOP primary for the governors race... but Lonegan has been using his Joe the Plumber endorsement at fundraisers and it is apparently helping...

And we care about this ####### why, exactly?

Probably because Joe was used as the posterboy for the GOP presidential campaign, and his quitting the party is indicative (on some level) of a failure of vision and that they have lost touch with their grass roots.

How true that is (or isn't) is open to interpretation - that would be my guess as to the thinking behind the story.

Oh dear god PLEASE don't let him join the Libertarians....... I don't want to have to find yet another party to join

 The Libertarian party has a recruitment booth on the boardwalk at Atlantic city - sandwiched between a place that sells costume jewelery and a place that offers $1 palm readings.

When I quit the Dim Party, the Washington Post covered it in detail. I'll have to find that article for you, if I can.

I missed this little gem. TY VW, your delusions of grandeur are truly remarkable, I am in awe.

Why do you want to be a 'member' of a party anyway? One can be political without being part of a herd :)

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

Well, you have to be registered with some party to vote in the primaries :P

I guess I could start a new party. I think i'd call it the Piss Off party. Our mantra will be "Piss off n00bs, we won't fund your wars or welfare".

######, the US electoral system makes me crazy!

In a parliamentary system, parties elect their leaders in a smoke filled backroom full of party elders.

In our system, the rank and file members of the party get to decide who will represent them on the ballot.

In America, it is as it should be.

Both systems seem deficient in some way.
