I know I have seen topics kind of like this on here before,,,insurance, banks etc..well today on my day off I decided to do a little shopping around, and I called MET Life insurance....their premium WITH a foreign driver's license person being the secondary driver was less than half than what I was paying with GEICO. Needless to say I switched right away! When Carlos does get his Texas license it will drop even more. Just a helpful hint for everyone out there shopping around. I was very satisfied with the service, the lady was so nice, and I ended up changing my homeowners from Farmer's to MET as well. Saved me 200 a year doing that.

I AM a happy camper today!

The Farmers loading for a non US DL is usually 10%. But it would vary by State.

I was not charged anything extra (State Farm). Also no doubt varies by State.

Does anyone know if it helps having an international drivers license, which I do and I have also driven many times in the states.

I shall also be going on my daughters insurance until I acquire my Florida driving license

Is it true that you can not insure a car until you have a State's DL?

I mean, LaGreenEyes is adding her beau to her policy, but what if the policy holder has a foreign licence?

Hubby bought me a car the second day I arrived here (it's under my name only and I only had foreign license) and we managed to insure it right away. We used Progressive.

So I understand that the policy is on your name?

Yes. The rate was a bit higher than that of someone with US license, but they gave me discount every 6 months since I have never filed any claims and no traffic violations either. They also gave me around $40 discount once I got my US license.

Maybe you should shop around, make some calls and explain your situation, then you can see who gives you the best deal.

Insurance is regulated by the State, so each State has its own rules and regulations, and whilst some things are common by no means all things.

A International Drivers Permit just evidences your home country license, not in itself relevant.

Some States have large populations who can not obtain US Licenses, most companies recognise this, as I mentioned with Farmers in CO they will load 10%.

Usually the policy is rated on the family, the worst driver is charged for the vehicle they usually drive, then the next worst driver on their vehicle, if there are more vehicles than drivers they get allocated to the best driver.

A new comer will have the issue of not only a loading but most companies also credit score, so will miss out on the discount, or much of it.

Usually works out best if you are added rather than quoted as new business, so get your Insurance sorted out before you add the immigrating driver.

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”
