Traveling inside USA

My Wife came to USA in January on a Fiancee Visa. We got married and applied for AOS Greencard, Employment Authorization, and Advance Parole Travel in March. We are planning on taking a couple of trips this summer inside the USA. Does she need any other document other than her Foreign Passport to be eligible for travel within the US? Her Fiancee Visa expired in April.

At the airport along with her airport would I need to carry the AOS Letter stating that we applied or any other documents like our marriage certificate?

Thank You

yes she can travel inside the USA and yes it is good idea to carry those documents just in case a question is raised

YMMV

Especially include the NOA from the AOS package - that shows her current status is "applicant to adjust status" which covers her current status.

My Advice is usually based on "Worst Case Scenario" and what is written in the rules/laws/instructions. That is the way I roll... -Protect your Status - file before your I-94 expires.

You don't need to carry anything for travel within the USA - my wife just carried her Colombian passport for id and when she got her driver's license then just that. However, if you are going near the Mexican border - you may want to carry the rest of the documents (the border patrol acts very differently in those areas). Good Luck and Jai Ho!

Carry EVERYTHING THAT YOU HAVE. You never know. And indeed, if you travel anywhere near the Mexican border, you'll be more than glad that you have everything with you.

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

There is a poster here where his G/F/Wife was stopped at the NY aiport and detained. I would be wary of any airport that serves international flights.

I didn`t have any problems at Orlando international airport, and neither at Detroit airport. All I had was a russian passport and our marriage certificate (we hadn`t applied for AOS at that time) No need to worry. But anyway, take everything you`ve received from USCIS with you and have a good trip!

Sometime in 11/2006 --- Met online

09/26/2008 --- Got married

04/03/2009 --- AOS package sent

07/13/2009 --- Interview in Detroit,MI. Approved!!!

07/25/2009 --- GC received! Total: 3 months 12 days from NOA1 to GC mailboxhappy.gif

05/17/2011 --- ROC package sent

05/25/2011 --- NOA1 received

She can travel freely within the US, but keep the AOS Letter and the NOA from the AOS submission. You shouldn't have any issues since you are taking domestic trips.

When listening to the advice of 'carry everything from USCIS' - keep in mind that you and I as citizens, only carry a driver's license! I have never carried my citizenship certificate or a passport when traveling within USA - so think about that, when you get too paranoid. Good Luck

This is off-subject, but we could end up viewing these as "the good old days," once national ID cards are required, etc. (Officials have been fishing for this.) "Your papers, Comrade!"

There is a difference between a US Citizen traveling within the USA and a NON Us Citizen traveling in the USA. What about Marriage Certificate? are the flights booked in her married name (If she changed it) her passport is in her maiden name ( I am guessing). Would she need to take her marriage certificate also?.

Glasgow almost didnt let me travel to eh USA because the travel agents wrote my surname first and first name last, and my passport had my first name first, and second name last and I am a Scottish citizen!,

Granted, but his wife is not yet a citizen, nor does she have the greencard. So she would need her current non-US passport, and the NOA from the AOS to prove she is adjusting status.

The police was contented by my husband saying only : I am an US citizen, without even asking his ID. On the other hand, I had to deal with many questions and paper inspections before they let me go. There are many border patrols in Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, and California : anywhere within those states, many portable checkpoints on the highways !! I was inspected in the middle of the nation too :Indiana. Bring the non US citizen's passport, I-94, certified copy of your marriage certificate, and all of your AOS paper (NOAs and biometric app-stamp). They helped me alot facing all the inspections.
