You think ordinary citizens should carry with them, proof of citizenship and be asked by local police any time they are pulled over or questioned, to show proof of citizenship??? :o That's not the kind of America I want to live in.

No, I'm talking more obvious cases, no insurance, registration, license, ID and can't speak English.

How about big noses? Or if they carry a pocket watch? Slippery slope towards a disregard for our civil rights, spooks.

Believe as you see fit, this is America after all. I don't support people who violate our laws, that's all. And what is done to enforce those laws obviously doesn't work. Something different needs to be done in many areas. I went thru the immigration process for my wife legally, and I'm assuming you did too. Why should law breakers have it easier?

We could probably stop all murderers if we allowed police to storm into homes without search warrants, to demand DNA samples, etc., but civil rights get in the way of us become a police state. Given that being here without legal documentation is a civil offense and not a felony, nor is there any immediate detriment to society from undocumented workers, the heightened level of concern, some to the point of hysteria, IMO, is just misplaced anger. I certainly don't lose any sleep over it.

It's in the article - many crimes would go unreported and overall levels of safety would be reduced, not increased. Now, of course, no one should care about the levels of crime amongst the 'illegals' so who cares, right?

Right. It's not like they report any crimes anyway - they are the criminals.

Then may I assume that you feel sofware piracy is ok too? Renting a dvd and copying it? Using copyrighted material as your own? I don't lose sleep over these things either, so that makes it ok?

The lack of enforcement is what got us into this mess to begin with.

Being here without papers is a civil violation, not a criminal offense.

Steven,

"Just being here" may not be a criminal offense, but it is a crime for an undocumented

worker to hold a job in the United States.

They don't come here just to "be here" and you know it.
