I'd only be in favour of something like that if it replaced what we have already - not in addition to.

The govt. trying to backdoor that ####### into the UK. Trying to justify how we need an additional card (that you have to pay for) in addition to your passport (why do we even need paper passports?), driver's license, National Insurance card etc.

The downside of that of course is that centralising information into a single card - creates additional security issues for indentity theft.

Not everyone has a DL either. What is the requirement for carrying ID in the US? Are citizens required to carry something?

Not that I know of. I always carry my DL with me, but that's more out of habit than anything else. I know lots of people who don't bother or simply leave it in their car.

Dunno about citizens - but us LPRS most definitely are. In fact, you're technically breaking the law if you go out for a run leaving your wallet in the car - and you happen to get stopped by police.

I know we are meant to - although I don't. :) Another reason for getting that citizenship this year!

Yeah I don't either - though I haven't been stopped by police as yet. Of course - if the police are allowed to ask about my status without much consideration due cause I could be in trouble ;)

Not stopped, but involved in a collision (a suspected illegal rammed my behind at a stop light) but the police were not interested in anything except my DL, despite my plummy UK accent. Gotta love it really.

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

Of course, but I thought the attitude of the attending cops was, let's say 'interesting' based on the fact that both of us were not US citizens.

Yeah and if you and the illegal weren't in the country, that'd be one less car accident (them furriner's don't know what side of the road to drive on) for the cops deal with when their time would be better served answering calls for crimes committed by (or to) USCs!

Imagine - the US taxpayer having to foot the bill for a car accident involving foreign nationals! By rights we should be presenting the bill at the foot of the foreign government!

An outrageous scandal, by Jiminy!

Absolutely, how dare we drive on US roads! (incidentally, he wasn't illegal as it transpired. Good thing too, insurance could have been murky!)
