Fine by me, as long as 2011 can be the year of the Toah and 2012 the year of the Koran.

What a waste time.

Well just to be a nitpicker, if you want 2011 to be the Year of the Torah, it should really be the Hebrew calendar year ה'תשע"א) 5771 ) which overlaps approximately with the Gregorian year 2011 (it would run from Sept 2010 to Sept 2011).

And after that it's the end of the world.

Thanks for that. Now I've got that REM song running loops through my head ... it's the end of the world as we know it... :bonk:

Sorry. Try this one....Stand in the place where we live.

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.

Why do people like him?

That's the million dollar question. I'm convinced that a lot of people say they like him even if they don't because they're afraid not to. There's a great deal of pressure to be pro-Obama, and a stigma around being against him.

If anyone feels the pressure, just watch Fox News and pretty soon you'll be hating him based on inane and supercilious arguments.

I like Obama and I'm a Democrat and I'm a Christian. However:

(and that whole pesky Henry VIII thing).

I like Obama too.

I think you mean that whole pesky George III thing.

Henry VIII was king more than 200 years before the American Revolution.

No - she's talking about the Reformation (and the Church of England breaking from Rome).

Don't think so. This was all in the context of the US constitution and separation of church/state in this country. I understood her to mean America's push for independence from England. But perhaps you're right.

I hate Obama because he's a closet Muslim and his middle name is Hussein and he went to school in Indonesia when he was 6 years old. And because he uses fancy mustard on his hamburgers. And because his wife wears expensive shoes and is popular. Boy, do I hate her because she's popular! And because he's got cute kids, and a cute dog. But most of all I hate him because he gives a damn and is trying to fix the country's problems and change course on so many fronts neglected over the past eight 8 years by the bumblers before him. The nerve of actually daring to do what he was elected to do! How dare he. Boy, the more I think about it, the more I hate him. Hate hate hate.

The Reformation had long lasting implications beyond Henry VIII's rule. Its significant in the sense that it wholly changed the landscape of Christianity - some of this was carried over to the US, given its colonial history.

I have this really stupid dumb impression that the reason why settlers came here in the first place was to get

Religious Freedom!

Ironically, most were using essentially the same bible, but had many different ways of interpreting what it says. Still no two groups can agree on how to interpret it.

They came here because they were freaky-religious. They were in the "Zealot" category. Puritans were some f##ked up individuals. Unfortunately, they still exist today under different names.

Of course, Mormons were the "modern-day" freaky religious people, and the Puritans/Baptists tried to force them to abandon their religion, tried to outlaw it, killed them, etc. How amusing is that?

I know beyond a doubt that religious zealots are the worst forms of terrorists. And most of them are white.

Lady, people aren't chocolates. Do you know what they are mostly? Bastards. ####### coated bastards with ####### filling. But I don't find them half as annoying as I find naive bobble-headed optimists who walk around vomiting sunshine.

I pretty much agree with that statement...and since I am obsessed with C.S. Lewis he has a quote I love that I probably posted on VJ before: ""Of all bad men religious bad men are the worst." But I also know there is a lot of good from people who are "religious" sometimes too.
