If I already have a SSC since I was under F-1, do I need to apply for a new one?

Hello everyone,

I studied and worked in the States since 2001. Last year I quitted my job and came back to my country with my fiance to meet my parents. I got my SSC when I was a student and has been filing taxes for all these years. My question is: will I have to get a new social # once I arrive the U.S.? Or can I skip this while applying for the AOS, EAD and all the other things? (Is my old SSN still valid? I still plan to file my 2008 Tax when I return on May 20.) Thank you for your advice.

your social security number stays with you for life. you should update your immigration status with SSA once you're a permanent resident though. also if your card says anything on it like not valid for work purposes, you might want to apply for a new card. the number will stay the same though.

I will add - make sure to use the same SS number otherwise your social security when you reach 62+ may be reduced (or worse denied). Good Luck

You will keep the same number, but if you plan to work and file taxes using your married name, you need to apply for the name change with SSA to update your SSN record and be issued a new card in your married name.
