Umm.. if someone burn my country's flag.. i'd punch them and curse them to tragic death.. well.. i guess we've been taught all the years in school to pay high respect to the flag as it represent country, religion and the King.. so it'd be a big issue for Thai people..

But American flag? hmm.. i just dont like to see any flag burn.. but it just doesnt have a segnificant meaning for me.. but i wouldnt do anything to disrespect it either. :)

Yes, we should respect the flag. But freedom is even of higher value, even if expressing that freedom seems offensive to others. Without freedom of speech (flag burning), paradoxically, the flag loses its meaning.

Yup. If it did become illegal, you'd have a million flags being burned in protest, and then they'd move on to another way to protest. You'll then see people pissing on the flag, or smearing shiat on it.

It's a non-problem calculated to bring out red state voters like incanada.

I don't think it was a waste of time. Sure, there's other things they can be doing, and they do handle more then one thing in a day usually.

I am a veteran of the US Army. No, I don't speak of all veterans. I don't think burning the flag is any way, shape, or form free speech. People do it to insult other people. If i were to die serving my country, my coffin would be draped with that so called piece of cloth. I risked my life for that flag. It should not be descreated in any fashion here in the US. We can't control morons in other countries.

So someoen has some beef with the government. That's fine. Try and show your dislike in meaningful ways without being a moron by burning the flag. Actually use your free speech and freedom of the press rights to try and reach as many people as you can. You'd probably get through to alot more people that way. I might listen to you, until yoiu torched a flag.

BTW, this amendment has been requested many times by all 50 states. And each time congress votes on it, it gets closer and closer to being approved. This time, the house approved it and the senate was one vote away from having the 2/3rds needed to pass it.

If a cross is burned.....is that free speach as well or a hateful act?

If a koran is burned.....is that free speach as well?

What if we burned a Mexican flag?

The public reaction to our own flag being burned is curious when it relates to other acts of burning items in the name of free speach. The burning of our flag seems to be acceptable while other things may not.

I'm not saying this was a great use of time by our gov't, but an interesting question none the less.

Personally I do not agree with the burning or disrespectful treatment of any of those things you mentioned...BUT the Cross, Koran, Mexican Flag or whatever else is not the "unifying symbol" of our nation.

Just my 1st reaction to the topic....

Liefde is een bloem zo teer dat hij knakt bij de minste aanraking en zo sterk dat niets zijn groei in de weg staat

IK HOU VAN JOU, MARK

Take a large, almost round, rotating sphere about 8000 miles in diameter, surround it with a murky, viscous atmosphere of gases mixed with water vapor, tilt its axis so it wobbles back and forth with respect to a source of heat and light, freeze it at both ends and roast it in the middle, cover most of its surface with liquid that constantly feeds vapor into the atmosphere as the sphere tosses billions of gallons up and down to the rhythmic pulling of a captive satellite and the sun. Then try to predict the conditions of that atmosphere over a small area within a 5 mile radius for a period of one to five days in advance!

Those acts are also expressions of Free Speech. It's pure symbolism and does nothing except evoke emotions. It's like letting someone else's anger upset you. You can either let them have that power over you or you can ignore their tirade.

But....like our flag, they are symbols. My post was in reference to flag burning and it's relationship to free speach. Burning other symbols may not be socially acceptable, but flag burning seems to be ok.

Perhaps the very nature of our flag makes it a unique circumstance, but certainly there seems to be some hypocrisy there.

See....we say they are free speach, but what would happen in the public if some white people starting torching Mexican flags in California?

I throw this out as an example....

The Klu Klux Klan burns crosses and it's protected speech. What's the difference?

Ehhh.....I guess.

I think people are more outraged in that case. Perhaps we've gotten used to the idea of our flag being burned and thus the effectiveness of the message is lost.
