that all the time spent debating whether to make a constitutional amendment on burning the flag was a shocking waste of time.

I think this might apply more to those of us who have moved here...but you might prove me wrong.

Don't get me wrong I am a supporter and lover of the USA and intend to become a citizen but please.....that time could be so much better spent on more worthy issues.....such as the appalling state of the medical care and costs here!

Yes. Welcome to American politics - or at least Karl Rove style. Whenever an election is around the corner, the tactic is to bring forward some emotional hot button issue like flag burning or gay marriage to scare core consituents not to cross party lines and vote for the other guy no matter how corrupt your party's guy is. The politics of fear - and it seemed to work there for awhile, especially after 9/11 - everybody was a bit jumpy.

ok, before I even say this, I've put on the flame-proof suit.... but I just don't see burning a flag as that offensive. Yes, it's a symbol, but a much more offensive act to me is the harm of US citizens by terrorists from home or abroad and I think the distruction of the land and all it's inhabitants in the process is a more offensive gesture toward the US than burning a piece of cloth.

*RUNS*

I'm a US Navy veteran and I believe in the first amendment (the rest of the constitution too). Burn the flag... it's just cloth.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."
