I may or may not agree with the points you are making, but you are not being offensive or hurtful.

That may be a first for me.

What is NOT "legitimate debate" is the use of inflammatory, hateful and derogatory terms to refer to any minority.

Is it ok to insult a member of a majority? There are quite a few groups on OT who are routinely insulted by theres' no banning. We're all equal here but some of us are more equal than others.

Referring to the gay community at large as "sexual fetishists" (which is effectively what Dano did) is inflammatory, hateful and derogatory.

Hateful or just an incorrect use of the concept? If you had a sexual attraction to shoes and I made fun of it, should I get banned, too?

"Sexual fetishism, or erotic fetishism, is the sexual arousal brought on by objects, situations or body parts not conventionally viewed as being sexual in nature. Sexual fetishism may be regarded, e.g. in psychiatric medicine, as a disorder of sexual preference or as an enhancing element to a relationship. The sexual acts of fetishes are characteristically depersonalized and objectified, even when they involve a partner

In a review of the files of all cases over a 20-year period which met criteria for non-transvestic fetishes in a teaching hospital, 48 cases were identified, and the objects of their fetishes included clothing (58.3%), rubber and rubber items (22.9%), footwear (14.6%), body parts (14.6%), leather and leather items (10.4%), and soft materials and fabrics (6.3%)"

Is this your logic - that its OK to disparage minorities because some people "routinely" disparage majorities?

The only appropriate response to that is first  then  then

I mean seriously - are you clueless about why certain minorities enjoy a "protected" status? Its because the minority is less able to protect itself and because the "discrimination" that those groups has suffered is, for the most part, a lot more involved than the bit of random name-calling directed against majorities.

I'd quit while you're behind on the psycho-analysis though, as there are a few people here who do that for a living.

Seems to work both ways or should.

Please give the list of minorities given protected status on the TOS. I must be looking in the wrong place.

An Internet forum is hardly real life; thus, comments made here simply don't carry the same weight. In any case protected status doesn't overide Freedom of Speech in the 1st Amendment in the real world. It may be rude but your argument has little basis in law. This isn't a government website so it can have highly restrictive posting rules or none at all.

I'd quit while you're behind on the psycho-analysis though, as there are a few people here who do that for a living.

No psycho-analysis was used by me unless you mean me looking up the fetish stuff and none of those professionals bothered to comment so again I apologize for fact checking.

I again call on the mods to step in.

VJ TOS allows homophobia.

WRONG.

VJ TOS:

Permitted Uses. You agree that you are responsible for any Content and communications that you Post and for any consequences thereof. You agree to use the Service (including but not limited to the discussion forums) only to send and receive messages, material, and in general Content that is “in conformity with or permitted by law” (legal), proper and if part of the discussion forums then also related to the particular subject matter. By way of example, and not as a limitation, you agree that when using the Service, you will not:

• Defame, abuse, harass, stalk, threaten or otherwise violate the legal rights (such as rights of privacy and publicity) of others.

Post Content intended to degrade, intimidate, or incite violence or prejudicial action against members of a protected group. For instance, racist or sexist content may be considered hate speech.

Gays are an explicity protected group in the hate crime legislation of most US states. They are in my state Illinois and probably are in yours too. Click here to check your state http://www.adl.org/learn/hate_crimes_laws/map_frameset.html

For reference here is the Illinois hate crimes statute http://www.ilga.gov/legislation/ilcs/fullt...3000050K5-5-3.2

As a recognized protected minority, ad hominem attacks on gay people do violate the VJ TOS, and may possibly even be a violation of the law in your state.

I may or may not agree with the points you are making, but you are not being offensive or hurtful.

That may be a first for me.

 Touche. You'll just have to try harder next time ;)

See above for the legal definition of a "protected minority". This is an established concept under the law.

Sexual fetishism is not hateful. Most of us are fetishists of some form or other (I freely admit to a few myself....). What's wrong is stigmatizing an entire population by associating their experience with this one behavior, as though that were the sum total of what it means to be gay in our society.

0h Lawd! Please make it stop.

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.

Thread closed for review by VJ Moderation.

After review, this thread will remain closed. It has run its course and has disintegrated into an assault on homosexuality. Offensive posts with derogatory labels - and posts quoting such posts - have been removed.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”
