He's not just engaging in legitimate debate - he's consistently being offensive to a minority group. There is no justification for that.

The military doesn't allow neo-Nazis and and KKK members to espouse their beliefs openly or wear offensive tattoos. I'm sure some have served but it doesn't mean you want some groups pushing their radical lifestyle into the military. It's not a good idea to play politics in the military especially during wartime.

Drunks and drug addicts can pull a trigger too but you don't want them when they are openly flaunting regulations. Hey, they wanna serve too.

The thousand or so servicemen and servicewomen who got the boot for violating don't ask don't tell every year usually outed themselves and chose to lie in the first place to get into the military (fraudulent enlistment) then decided their sexuality trumped their service.

Not that there's much of a connection being gay and being an alcoholic, heroin addict or being a member of a white supremacist organisation - but its surely reasonable to ask why the military sets these apparently arbitrary standards for enlistment.

There must surely be a logical argument that doesn't involve preconceived ideas or prejudice. I'll be interested to hear what that argument is.

Discussing (here on VJ, or elsewhere) the issue of gays serving in the military is just fine. That is a 'legitimate debate', and that's what this thread (I think) is about.

That is an ongoing public discussion and folks in Congress and the Administration are considering changing don't ask/don't tell, to allow gays to serve openly without having to hide their identity. Colin Powell has been on record supporting this. Secretary Gates has reservations about it, but is not flat out opposed. Your post above is legitimate. I may or may not agree with the points you are making, but you are not being offensive or hurtful.

What is NOT "legitimate debate" is the use of inflammatory,hateful and derogatory terms to refer to any minority. Referring to the gay community at large as "sexual fetishists" (which is effectively what Dano did) is inflammatory,hateful and derogatory. It's the equivalent of calling Jews Christ-killers or calling African Americans the N-word. I'm not gay. But I do take offense to this kind of language. It's simply unacceptable.
