Another one who believes that #######. Rational thought is what separates humans from the rest of the beasties. We can recognise patterns of behaviour and reject them if they do not conform to a more modern belief system. You don't go around trying to 'mount' every female on heat these days now do you? Yet, our ancestors thought this perfectly normal and natural behaviour.

You haven't been to very many frat parties, have you?

n00b, you don't try to get the ones IN HEAT

I know I certainly don't. But alcohol clouds the mind! Fortunately, I've never been drunk.

Nope, never. I get migraines and alcohol is a huge contributor. I've never felt the need to get so smashed that I wake up in a ditch five states away. :P

Good thing we don't have police, courts and prisons anymore because we're all so advanced now. Of course you stroll through any darkened street confident to can spot a bad guy and reason with him.

Believe me there are plenty of guys who would mount women in the street if they could get away with it.

Well, I can understand that. I get migraines from coffee, so I abstain. That is except for Timmies.

So that's your theory is it? That humans are incapable of self control and that only 'laws and policemen' are keeping things moderately under control? Laughable is what you are, totally laughable

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

I should have said religion is the opium of the masses and you'd readily agree.

Try using Plato's view next time. It may not look right to us "modern" folks but it sounds better than your laughing without any rationale.

"The "Ring of Gyges," which confers invisibility, is used in Plato's Republic as a thought experiment to argue that a person with such a ring, whether previously just or unjust, would use it to commit as many crimes as necessary to get what they want [book II, 359d]. Plato does not agree with this. The argument of the rest of the Republic, consequently, is that the just man would not be tempted by invisibility to commit crimes, because he would know that crime itself makes one unhappy and that he is better off to remain just."

Its a philosophical argument about free will Vs. the Id, though I'm not sure what it has to do with ALC's argument - as he's essentially disagreeing with Plato.

I think he's suggesting that he doesn't like your rationale for making the claim that claim about rational thought separating man from the beasts.

I have heard of social science studies that found that "most" men in their survey group would rape a woman if they could get away with it, and if there weren't any consequences to doing so.

I thought the id was our primitive desires and free will is doing as we please. They aren't opposed to one another. The argument is more are we moral naturally or is because we fear the consequences of getting caught? Cleo thinks we'll all just get along because we're naturally good but yes I think Plato is wrong here.

We are higher up on your food chain with a faculty of reason but we can also exceed the cruelty of animals.

Exactly. Then there are lesser offenses like taking money without getting caught.

Animals are amoral though.

Not everyone thinks like this though - and other pressures come into play, like not wanting to teach your kids the wrong lessons by pocketing a lost wallet, rather than turning it in.

People are complex in their moral and ethical attitudes. The fear of getting caught isn't the only reason people choose not to commit crimes or immoral acts.
