Where would be the best place to buy land and build a home in PI? I want to get started now, so by the time I do retire everything is ready and I can leave the U.S. for good. I love beaches, but also tranquility, and I want it to be beautiful for my future wife. Also would like to have running water, I'm not being funny, but that is a must.

ugh.. depends. you want to live near the city or not.

i'm sure your wife can point the way.

it also depends on whether she wants to live near relatives or not.

one good advice though is to get a good and trusted person to help do the transaction for you.

Make sure that the property is really named under both you and your spouse's name,

i've heard lots of horror stories about people who gets cheated out of their retirement house money

because they trusted the wrong person.

Americans can own condos and lease certain lands.

The filipina can end up with it all if an American buys other property in PI as the American doesn't have any right to it!

I know well as we/I bought 4 houses there. If we split up my wife owns it all.

if you do decide on buying property, let your wife haggle and transact with the owner. as much as possible dont show yourself because when they see that an american is the buyer, they will definitely jack up the price.

Can you ask a more open ended Question Next time?

In my opinion, If an American doesn't consider PI for retirement then he has made a mistake.

I can see health issues from being a issue.

But other than that, It's kinda of a no brainer to retire in PI.

Why is that ? If you are marry to a filipina then it is really posible for you to retire in PI. As long you have enough money you can retire to any places you want. For us we can probably retire in China or Australia but ofcourse im a filipina so i'll suggest to my husband to retire instead in Philippines  ..... Also i think lots of spouses here that maybe more open minded than you are to respect and consider our own "wives" opinion about moving back in our own country after 10 years or whatever to spend our life back again closer to our own family and friends after giving our spouses a "Pabor" to live first here in the U.S coz of thier jobs and need to plan it before moving in Philippines. So where is the no brainer there ?

Oohhh Wait ! I see it........................ It said, T...a...l...l - c..o...o...l - o..n.....e ? :P (joke) pero totoo LOL.

Chains do not hold a marriage together. It is threads, hundreds of tiny threads which sew people together through the years.

For those so challenged with English please let me interpret:

"But other than that, It's kinda of a no brainer to retire in PI" means "For those who are thinking about it, to consider retiring in the PI is a relatively easy decision"

YMMV
