Piggy Flu

Nobody's really posted about this, but I couldn't avoid it anymore (and God do I love that barfing emoticon). I haven't been too worried about swine flu' (oops! Meant to call it influenza so people aren't paranoid about eating piggies), but then I saw this update which cites a case in Slough, which isn't too far from where I'm at (I'm in a pretty nice area and still a fair distance away). I know that people commute from there to the university, but luckily, as the exam period is finishing up, the campus is growing emptier. It does make me a little nervous, though, that it is a bit too close for comfort and I'm so close to shipping out. I'm not going to freak out because it's nowhere near as serious as other flu' mutations, but it's still a bit ew. And I will NOT be the sole cause of piggy flu in Alaska.

Anybody else a tad worried about this?

A [very] healthy Magpie.

Hmm I think you'll be fine, Magpie. :)

There's been a suspected case in Bath too, but it was nothing more than that - suspected. It could have been many other things yet because of the hype over swine flu, everyone breaks out into panic.

Hey Magpie, there's 1 confirmed case here in Norfolk, NE. Another 3 probable cases and 31 pending new cases of piggy flu. :crying:

The schools here were closed last friday to be cleaned and sanitized. Not that, that will do much good, coz most of the kids that were off from school last week and during the weekend all seemed to go shopping to Wal-Mart with their parents. Where do i work you might ask?? Yep you guessed it, friggen Wal-Mart!!!! Due to my immune system being compromised due to being on prednisone for 5 months, being asthmatic and having lung disease, I'm in the high risk category for catching "Piggy Flu". I think, all the local kids and their parents that had been in contact with someone with "piggy flu" should be quarantined! Last week i thought i was going to be another "piggy flu" case, had most of the symptoms, but thankfully i just had flu!! *whew*

Separated!!

It would be such a bummer for anybody here on Visajourney to catch it -- I'm hoping and praying nobody will. And yes  they should quarantine peeps who have it for a limited period until it passes. People do get panicky but, sadly, it is a legit virus and there's no way of knowing how many unreported cases there are. I remember what it was like in Asia with SARS but the UK's excellent in terms of preparation for this kinda outbreak.

Maria, I'm so glad it wasn't piggy flu that you had! Whew -- everyone, just keep yourselves healthy and do the whole catch-it-bin-it-kill-it thingummy. All together now!

Initially I was concerned but to be honest reasonable precautions would seem to limit its spread and from what we hear at the moment the symptoms experienced are generally not much worse than regular flu over here.

The awful news channels here spread panic to fill air time and keep us watching - Sky News in particular is forever using the "NEWS ALERT" banner for everything - anyone remember when a news alert was for something major?

..hmm, who'd have thought there's something I'm not currently worried about lol

It is for reasons like Sky and Fox News that I'm glad I don't have a TV :P. I'm safe from their general over-dramatizations of everything . If they saw some guy toting an "End of the World is Nigh" board, they'd cite him as a legitimate source and proclaim the end of the world.

:D What visa stage are you at, Steve?

Awaiting NOA2 for I-130 and/or I-129F (possibly around a month away) :)

I hope you get it soon! It shouldn't take too long :D honest. I know the waiting is horrible but it's wonderful once you get it.

Now, must avoid piggy flu...

Hey Magpie 56 million people in the UK. I know this thing spreads but I suggest you go and buy a lottery ticket as I think you may have more chance of getting 4-5 numbers then getting swine flu. I wouldn't worry. Before you know it you will be on this side of the pond.

As for Slough im sure thats the most exciting thing to happen in Slough since the office was filmed there.

Reminds me of this poem about the place

Come, friendly bombs, and fall on Slough!

It isn't fit for humans now,

There isn't grass to graze a cow.

Swarm over, Death!

OK, so,

1. This new flu is not worse than the regular old flu, although it is a new strain. Avoid it just like you would avoid the regular flu - wash your hands, try not to hang out with sick people. Get your sleep. Eat your vitamins. (Don't listen to our vice president. UGH)

2. Pretty useless to quarantine people. Usually (as with most viruses) they are contagious before they even start to feel a twinge.

On a more light hearted note, I got a downright nasty cold on Monday as the news was really starting to break - at first I thought that after hearing about it on the radio all morning I'd talked myself into feeling sick. No, reeeealy bad cold. I haven't perfected the cough-oink yet, but I cheered myself up thinking about what cool You-Tube video I could upload if I could cough-oink and went around doing it in public. Figured I'd get arrested under the yelling-fire-in-a-crowded-theatre clause.

K-1:

January 28, 2009: NOA1

June 4, 2009: Interview - APPROVED!!!

October 11, 2009: Wedding

AOS:

December 23, 2009: NOA1!

January 22, 2010: Bogus RFE corrected through congressional inquiry "EAD waiting on biometrics only" Read about it here.

March 15, 2010: AOS interview - RFE for I-693 vaccination supplement - CS signed part 6!

March 27, 2010: Green Card recieved

ROC:

March 1, 2012: Mailed ROC package

March 7, 2012: Tracking says "notice left"...after a phone call to post office.

More detailed time line in profile.

I would SO utterly give that five stars. Oh the power of the intertron!

I'm not too concerned, I just don't want something yuck before I leave. I don't know anybody's who's sick that I'd hang around with, and I do have my num vitamins (Basset's chewy vitamins).

As for Slough, Paulinepens, it's kinda funny as you can tell the minute you get into it. I live in a very green, lush area, birds singing, owls tuu-wuuing at inconvenient times at the night, foxes wailing, etc., mmm naturetypething, and the minute you go through Windsor and go through it to Slough on the other side...you can see the grey-green of Sloughness creeping and spilling into anything. It's a bit like the red weed in War of the Worlds (BEFORE the version with Tom Cruise existed). It is to be Avoided.

Grooooink!

It's apparently fashionable to want piggy flu. There's a Facebook group for it... :dead:
