EAD is usually good enough, but if you wait for the GC they will issue one until its expiry (normally).

I can not remember how much the test cost, $20?, not a big deal whatever it was.

It cost me nothing to take the written or the road test but after you take the written then you had to pay $25 for the learner's permit and then after the road test then I think it cost about the same again for the provisional licence

I dont know about Iowa, but in Nebraska, you only have 25 questions and you dont have to have the learners permit first, which some states require. You can only miss 5, and they have a practice test on the DMV website. Some of the questions are a bit tricky and you have to think about them. But there is no time limit, etc.

Lake missed the first go round on the written but passed the second time, we went to a smaller town so he wouldnt have to stress so much about 4 lane roads and one ways all over the place. :)

Kate, have you tried http://www.dmv.org ?? Its a great site, and most states even have practice tests available. It answers a lot of questions for each state if you click on your state of residence. Lake passed after we found this website, it really helped him a lot, we didnt realize it was available the first go-round.

Well, u have probably found it by now, but in case you havent...

I did the VA tests after reading thru the book a couple times. A few of the numerical answers had to be rote-learnt but it was an easy test regardless. The driving test was extremely easy... just stopped at the stop signs, traffic lights, kept to the speed limits and pulled in (head-first) into a parking space at the end.

Overall, it was much easier than the tests I did at home in Sydney.

Sept 2005 engaged in USA, Dec 2005 married in Australia ;)

Apr 2006 completed DCF in Sydney, May 2006 emigrated to USA, Aug 2006 started new job

Jul 2007 finally had wedding, Dec 2007 moved into our first house

Jun 2008 our son is born, now just waiting for I-751...

I had a bit of a coming together with another vehicle a few weeks ago and unfortunatly got slapped with 2 tickets. One for careless driving as I turned on a green light not a green arrow and 2 for driving without proof of a license (In England the courts lost my card part of my license and failed to provide me with a new one anytime near me leaving the country without requiring my passport which is a bit risky when you are planning on leaving the country within a few weeks) Anyway I had to go to the DMV and take my written test followed by my road signs test which lasted a total of 1 hour then when I could arrange the time off work I managed to book a driving test and as a lot of other people have said it lasts a whole 15 minuts and involved driving at no more than 20 mph as the roads I was on were in a housing area so the speed limit was only 20 mph anyway. Pretty easy. Easier than the hour driving test on duel carriageway and inner city roads of Bristol and multiple choice written test done in pencil I took in England about 8 years ago.

I did my driving test in Charlotte, NC yesterday.

The differences with that and the one I did back home were:

In Ireland, you get a provisional license, apply for the test, wait a year, do a fairly difficult test involving reversing around corners uphill and such nonsense and hope that you are not one of the 47% that fails just to wait another year for another test while continuing to pay thru the nose for insurance and having a fully licensed driver with you in the car at all times (...at least in theory).

I went along to the DMV yesterday hoping the process would be a little faster than in Ireland. Anything under 6 months would have been a bonus! As it turned out, I walked into the DMV at 8:15am and by 9:45am walked out with a NC Drivers License....how efficent is that...!

I needed to answer 25 multiple choice questions but after 10 questions had managed to get 3 wrong...doh! But got all the rest right, so passed that, then the road test itself was a very quick drive (15 mins) around the local area, all within a 35mph zone. I did a 3 point turn, reversed, parked, kept an eye in my mirrors, kept within the limit, asked questions to clarify anything if I was unsure what the testers instructions were and that was that. Back to the DMV office and was issued with a North Carolina drivers license.

Best of luck to all that do the test in the US. If you read the manual, know the signs, drive nice and easy in the road test, keep an eye on your mirrors regularly, check over your shoulder before pulling off, fully stop at a stop sign, do not run over any old ladies crossing the road, then you will pass. :-)

i should have added that I am surprised that an Insurer would not cover you, most will. There are many people who can not get US DL's.

AAA is very picky. IIRC when I had AAA in California, they wouldn't cover any driver who hadn't held a US license for more than 3 years. Other insurance companies are a lot easier to deal with.

I actually ran a Stop sign on my driving test and still passed. (It was not really my fault.)

I know that here in Maine, it's a lot easier to get a DL than in the UK. :P

Yeah, I took my in California, and drove 45mph in a 25mph zone, and still passed! :)
