Exactly, her actions have consequences beyond the intended, (rather like the Iraq war - the consequences of which seemed to elude Whitehall when the rest of the nation were all too well aware of them, and voiced it, loudly, idiots!) and an open debate about such idiotic policies would be a good thing - although, sensible commentary will probably be drowned out by the screaming antics of Savage and Smith.

Yeah I think the post of Home Secretary needs to have some of its powers rescinded - which I think happened on the issue of prison sentences under Jack Straw not so long ago, with either a High Court or a European Court ruling about the Home Secretary using their powers to keep people in jail if it was politically expedient, and popular, to do so.

Smith's the one who was pushing for that DNA database of all UK Citizens, extending the time that the police can hold criminal suspects without trial. She's also reclassified cannabis to a Class B substance, suggested that the police can restrict the use of photography and is currently all over that National ID card bollocks which the government is pushing through regardless of public resentment.

Her Wiki bio is quite interesting - some pretty funny stuff about expense claims filed for bath plugs and pornographic movies. Salacious tabloid ####### - but hilarious all the same.
