"I think it's important that people understand the sorts of values and sorts of standards that we have here, the fact that it's a privilege to come and the sort of things that mean you won't be welcome in this country,"

"Coming to this country is a privilege. If you can't live by the rules that we live by, the standards and the values that we live by, we should exclude you from this country and, what's more, now we will make public those people that we have excluded.

"We are publishing the names of 16 of those that we have excluded since October. We are telling people who they are and why it is we don't want them in this country."

The list of the 16 "least wanted" includes radio talk show host Michael Savage, real name Michael Weiner.

"This is someone who has fallen into the category of fomenting hatred, of such extreme views and expressing them in such a way that it is actually likely to cause inter-community tension or even violence if that person were allowed into the country," Ms Smith told BBC Breakfast.

Also named are American Baptist pastor Fred Waldron Phelps Snr and his daughter Shirley Phelps-Roper, who have picketed the funerals of Aids victims and claimed the deaths of US soldiers are a punishment for US tolerance of homosexuality.

"If people have so clearly overstepped the mark in terms of the way not just that they are talking but the sort of attitudes that they are expressing to the extent that we think that this is likely to cause or have the potential to cause violence or inter-community tension in this country, then actually I think the right thing is not to let them into the country in the first place. Not to open the stable door then try to close it later," Ms Smith said.

"It's a privilege to come to this country. There are certain behaviours that mean you forfeit that privilege."

From a casual observation I will say that Dr. Savage does seem to be a bit like Hitler in his interests.

I don't believe for a minute that the United Kingdom decided to ban entry to U.S. talk-radio star Michael Savage on its own initiative.

First of all, Savage was not asking to enter the U.K.

Second of all, while Savage is a big fish in the U.S., his program is not widely known across the pond.

What would possess Home Secretary Jacqui Smith to single out Savage on a short list of 16 people worldwide who would not be welcome?

I think I know the answer.

But first, you have to understand the backdrop to this story.

Barack Obama and the Democrat-controlled Congress are conducting a scorched-earth war on the First Amendment. The Federal Communications Commission will soon be headed and controlled by an appointee who thinks government, not the free market, should control broadcast programming.

Oddly enough that's almost exactly what one of savages callers said last night.

Savage has to inflate his own importance to justify his "colorful" views.

The victim card seems to work well for him, and savage is adept at playing it. Though it doesn't disguise how completely ridiculous and overblown savages diatribes are.

Anyone would think that the American nation had collapsed the way he carries on.

Hitler was also good at doing this. Similar persona as I said. And just as confused.

All I'm saying is that in my view they share a similar persona, they certainly use similar rhetoric, and similar argument styles.

This, sadly, is only giving that nutjob more publicity which in turn will make him even richer than he already is. My stomach turns everytime someone flicks his show on within my hearing range.

And it's not just muslims that he hates so vehemently. He's not too fond of homosexuals either and says some rather vile things right to their face before slamming the phone down. Dispicable man who fuels his show with hatred to gain ratings. Sicker is that people listen to him and agree with him.

Yeah that's my feeling too. Banning them only draws attention to them.

As it is savage doesn't have a wide listenership in the UK and people like him aren't taken seriously over there except for a few people on the extreme far right.

No had not heard that. Only similar person I can think of is Robert kilroy silk but he's pretty tame compared to the US talk show guys. And he never had a mainstream following.

This just seems surprising that they would have a list banning people ... who have not even tried to enter England and why release it except to mock those on the list or to add to the climate of stifling people from expressing (peacefully) their viewpoints.

It's of interest to recall when my left-wing buds were the first line of defense against such things... but no more, they are cheering it on as if it can't turn on them.
