How about healthcare systems which don't provide a guarantee of adequate care, no matter how much you pay in premiums, where illiterate community college graduates are the ones making medical decisions on your behalf, even against the advice of medical professionals?

Fishster, lets not pick on community college graduates--and as you well know its more likely that a Harvard or Standford MBA at the top is making loss/profit decision to meet shareholder expectations that makes policy that then the underlings, even well meaning and literate community college graduates must follow. Many so-called illiterate community college types are more likely to be sympathetic to the plight of those in need--yet powerless to make any change against the powers that be.

"Doomed to being someone's #######?" That's not the usual 'better yourself / personal responsibility' philosophy? As I see it, the argument amounts to "sorry I'm just following orders". I wonder... if someone says "I'm not skilled/confident enough to get a better job" does that mean that they should have no code of ethical principles built into their work ethic? It's a slippery slope, as I see it.

I blame everyone involved. Speaking personally, if I pay a bunch of money for insurance coverage and I can't get the treatment I need, because some half-witted jobsworth is either blocking it, or trying to sell me (sorry, force on me) inferior treatment that conflicts with the doctor's advice, I'm not exactly going to feel like particularly sympathetic towards them.
