That is correct. You could have added him if you had presented your marriage contract within 30 days of your actual marriage. Now you will have to wait for open enrollment next year.

The benefits manager at my company just confirmed that my husband's arrival in the U.S. will qualify as a "Change in Life Event" so he will be covered from the day he arrives. Phew. :whistle:

Hi Nawal - not really sure what "self insured" means. It's a large international company with excellent benefits. They seemed to review my situation on its merits and decided it did qualify. I guess either they don't come across this situation too often and were sympathetic, or else have enough employees whose spouses are from another country and are therefore understanding about such situations. In any case I'm very relieved.
