Hi guys

i was just wondering if I should tell my hubby to get an international driver license before migrating here.He is being driving for like 12 years,So would this license and experience help us with low auto insurance??

No. He'll be treated as a new driver hence higher insurance rates.

Get one anyway. That, plus a valid DL from his country, can allow him to drive in the U.S. for one year. Be careful, though, because some police departments are woefully ignorant of what Int'l. DLs are. Regarding insurance, some companies will not even allow him to be added onto your existing policy until he has a DL from your state. (State Farm, at least in Texas, is one of these.) Some companies do or might. (Amica, at least in Texas, was one of these for us.)

I remember getting a State Farm policy in Dallas with a Tennessee DL (admittedly more than a decade ago), have things changed that drastically since then?

Perhaps I was unclear: one NEEDS a state DL in order to be insured by State Farm, at least in Texas. An Int'l. DP + foreign DL isn't enough.

It depends, some states will honor international DL and some states dont. So if I were you ask your hubby to go visit his nearest DMV and ask info regarding international DL.

Regardless of your experience and what type of DL you have that doesnt help in lowering auto insurance.

Can he prove that he has had no accidents/losses whilst insured in Pakistan? Written proof from an insurance company?

The reason i ask...Liberty Mutual added me on to my husbands insurance as an experienced driver as i could prove No insurance claims for 5+yrs in the UK.

How about a Provincial (Canadian) DL only?

(again, from experience: I actually had a State Farm policy in GA while I used an AB-issued DL, no IDP)

my husband had a international drivers liscence and got pulled over. they policeman said they are not valid here but it says right on the front page they are. he didnt give him a ticket or anything.

when he went to take the test they wouldnt accept it cuz it only had his birth year and not full birthday on it. u know something that probably dont matter but why not make him pay for a permit package anyway. so he had to get a permit and retest for the liscence.

An international driving permit is only a translation of the information on your original license. It doesn't give you any privileges you didn't already have, but it may make it easier for a police officer to read your license if your license isn't in English.

Different states vary widely in the amount of time they'll let you drive on a foreign license. Often, they'll let you drive for a long time if you're a tourist, but you've got to get a state license within a certain time period after establishing residence in the state. The time periods vary widely, as do the criteria for establishing residence. Usually, the laws are written more to account for US Citizens moving from one state to another instead of for people moving from overseas.

I think California is one of the strictest. After you get an apartment or house in the state, you have ten days when you can drive on your old license before you have to get a California drivers license. But many new immigrants don't have the right paperwork to allow them to get a California license ten days after they come.
