Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) Admits Obama Healthcare Plan Will Destroy Insurance Industry

Considering that the insurance industry is part of the problem i don't think many will see that as a bad thing. Before people start making assumptions insurance is not health care.

I happen to like my insurance. Because of it I get great health care. Why should I give that up? What about my rights?

Depends on what system they would introduce.

I come from a country where health care is right for everyone. Not saying its a perfect system but nobody has to worry about health care whatever their financial situation, no such thing as co-pay or deductables, if you are unemployed or on a low income you don't contribute even dental care is free for all children and those on a low income, but there is also private health insurance available for those who want to pay. You can choose any doctor in any area you want. It's peace of mind especially in this economic climate, if you lose your job it can have a big effect on your lifestyle without having to worry about getting sick. I was amazed to find out how much people have to pay for health insurance in the US, in some cases more than house rental or a mortgage.

What many on the Right object to is the idea of paying into a public pool of insurance that would cover people who are not contributing. Nothing bothers them more than the idea of a welfare momma with 12 children, getting a free ride, and they are convinced that the Democratic Party likes to give something for nothing.

Every social program is open to abuse - its par for the course. That doesn't make it an inherently bad idea. I do think that there is a tendency on that side to look at the people who can't afford health insurance (or don't have the best plans through their jobs) as somehow lazy, and that their problems with the system are somehow their own fault.

I'd rather that we didn't make all these kinds of assumptions about other people.

I agree that this is not an inaccurate observation in relation to the objections brought up in regard to single-payer healthcare. At least on VJ anyway.

That doesn't mean its not a valid concern, however. There's always going to be abuse, as I said.

Charles, in all seriousness, if this fictitious mother of 12 is pregnant with her 13th child, but has no health insurance when she goes into labor, where do you think she'll go to have that baby?

There is practicality to consider there - there is a moral and ethical dimension to the provision of healthcare and you can't very well deny a person care because they're here illegally. That sticks in the craw of a lot of people and I suppose it should - but a bit of ill feeling is better than the alternative, because if you refuse to provide for the treatment of non-citizens you are also refusing to provide treatment for people who go on vacation without travel insurance.

The UK is supposed to provide medical services only to people who pay UK taxes, but they're not going to refuse to treat you (or bill you) if you break an arm.

Health Insurance companies are scum, they much prefer to send someone to their grave if it meant them saving money.

** the insurance companies. They suck 12K a year for our family of three from my employer and I and provide ####### in return. ** them!

Because your insurance sucks we must all change? WOW! Get a different job then!

Do you even know what your insurance costs?

Yep! family of 5 360 a month. It is awsome! My company even covers **. relationships.

Thanks for confirming that you know nothing. There isn't an insurance company in the US that provides health insurance for a family of 5 for $360/month.

It's really not so simple as saying "I like what I have and don't want anybody to touch it".

i agree...

The thing is, just because you have a good deal now, it is no guarantee that it will continue to be a good deal. Things could change at any time.

Nothing bothers them more than the idea of a welfare momma with 12 children, getting a free ride, and they are convinced that the Democratic Party likes to give something for nothing.

This person will usually get medical care anyway... whether we continue with our current system or implement another. It's the people in the middle who can squashed.
