God Bless America

Essentially, when someone says "God Bless America", aren't they implying, "and nobody/nowhere else"?

I mean, why not say, "God Bless the World", or even "God Bless the Good People of the World"? I would even go along with "God has Blessed America".

I love this country, but I'm not sure that she deserves any preference from God over the rest of the world. At just over 200 years old, we're still a relatively young country, with a lot of power that we need to understand how to use more efficiently. I believe that we can use all the "blessings" that are available, but I don't think we deserve those blessings at the expense of other countries being lower on God's priority list, or maybe not making the list at all. The fact that some of us are Americans is either because of a random circumstance of birth, or because of an intentional immigration. Neither of which is great in and of itself, nor deserving of special attention from a deity.

One reason I don't watch award shows is because athletes and other entertainer's "thank God" for their awards....as if God has nothing better to do than select Grammy winners. I guess that's why there's war and famine...because God is too busy making sure entertainers are appropriately recognized for their talents.

By saying "GBA", in a way we're saying "we're better than you, or at least we should be in the eyes of God". It's like saying, we're more deserving of God's blessings. I think it's grand for patriotism, but not very healthy within a more global scope. "GBA" is another part of OUR country's arrogance, that pisses off the world.

I'd like to think that God doesn't have a list of favourite countries or favourite entertainers, but that he blesses good people equally.

God Bless all the good people on VJ, and all the good people in the world.

God works at USCIS. It is a known fact on VJ :jest:

Yet another reason for the problems in the world. He's out reviewing visa petitions.

But I'm wondering, Vermont or California, hourly or salaried, and does he get vacation days? :innocent:

I don't think many people are really giving their words much thought when they say, "God bless America." Maybe some mean it to the exclusion of other nations, but I doubt most do.

Most Americans believe the United States is the "greatest country in the world." That's hardly a novel theme across the globe. People of all nationalities generally think their particular country is "better than the rest." Do they always say this? No and many people -- including Americans -- can be quick to point out their own nation's problems.

However, when someone foreign does the same, watch how fast a citizen of whatever criticized country can go from "complaining" to "defending." I think we're all guilty of this response, at least to some degree.

Just because God may bless the U.S., that doesn't mean the rest of the world is considered expendable. It's just a saying (like "God bless you" when someone sneezes) and nothing more.

So you're saying America is just sneezing on the rest of the world?

Seriously though. I think it's more like when someone says to their child, "Good luck, go out and do your best". It's favoritism, and by nature it's exclusionary.

I really feel it's "meant" to be inclusionary (at least in his heart) when the President says, "God Bless America" but the intent is a sign of patriotism, which is also by nature exclusionary. I'm not against patriotism. Like I said, as imperfect as this country is, I love her, and love living here.

I think it's OK for a Senator or a Governor, or anyone who deals primarily with domestic issues per se, but for the President to do so...well, it's offensive to other countries....but if he didn't say it, he'd be considered as less than patriotic...and when I say President, I mean the office of the President, not a specific individual.

In a way, it's a "can't win" situation. But I guess that's why God gave America the best bombs.
