Catholics attack Dan Brown film Angels and Demons

It's just a movie, according to a recent interview with Ron Howard, he invited authorities from the RCC to view a rough draft of the movie and they refused to see it.

Actually watched the "The Da Vinci Code" three times, a very artful film, excellent sound track and took me to places I have never been before. And I enjoy movies with secret codes and tracking them down, it's entertainment. Though I knew the part about the "Priory of Sion" and the "Opus Dei" were all BS.

What disturbs me about the Roman Catholic Church and even our government is their over sensitivity to scandal, both the church and the government try to cover up bad deeds. The church does it by keeping it a secret, the government by stating this is highly classified material for national security. Furthermore, the church does not want any member reading about other religions of the world to broaden one's point of view, just want dumb stupid sheep that follows their every command. But very trusting sheep are led to slaughter.

Movies like this are free publicity for the CC.

To be fair to the Church I suspect that the media actually fabricates these little controversies by approaching people for their opinion (rather than the other way around).

It's much the same with the ####### about the Harry Potter books - the people that object to them because they feel that they "promote" witchcraft aren't exactly in a majority.

I disagree with you about the Da Vinci Code movie though Nick. I thought the adaptation was laborious - and too much time was spent trying to stay as true to the structure of the novel rather than risking alienating fans by doing a "proper" adaptation of the source material. I found overlong and rather boring - which can all be traced back to deficiencies in the screenplay.

Hopefully this one won't be quite so slavish to the book.

The Da Vinci Code was a terrible movie, dull as dishwater! I hope angels and demons will be better but I have my doubts. The books are identical, the way they are structured, he simply changed the names and subject matter. Very formulaic author.

The church should be glad that the movies are bad, people will be less likely to take them seriously than if they were oscar conteders.

Yeah - that's what I thought too. Brown has a bit of a Barbara Cartland thing going... Actually you'd be surprised how common that is. A lot of commercial fiction authors find a formula and milk it until the well runs dry.

How else does Nora Roberts or James Patterson manage to have a book out every 3 or 4 months. A lot of those guys don't actually write their own books either - but that's something else entirely.

Of DB's four books he came up with two styles. Davinci and A&D follow one style and the other two books follow the oher style. 2 religious based and 2 (awful) technology/conspiracy based. Has he actually written anything else since?

The Lost Symbol is out in a few months I think.

Its another Robert Langdon book.

I will have to give it a look at some point, when my library has it.

Or be a rebel, Download it off thepiratebay.org and print it off at work

I'm Catholic and I take these movies what they are.... An adaptation of an unremarkable, pedestrian book into an unremarkable, pedestrian movie.

However, my wife loves the series, so not only do I have to keep my mouth shut about how much I dislike Dan Brown's mental capacity to formulate sentences, I also get to see the movie opening weekend.

Well, they are page turners - some people like that from a book. It's odd to get all twisted up about a work of fiction though - it's like getting bent out of shape about bodice rippers. They are what they are, take them or leave them.

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

I think controversies like this arise because:

1) The media likes to seek them out - and milk them.

and

2) People like to criticise things for no other reason than that they are popular.

It could be worse though, not a film, but poor old Salman Rushdie with the death sentence fatwah for Satanic Verses. Now that's dedication to art for you. I doubt a Hollywood mogul would touch that one with a barge pole.
