Hello,

So my fiance and I have decided we want to get married first, and then go the CR1 route as opposed to the K1. This is largely due to the fact I want to be able to work as soon as I come over to the US with our son.. My question - are we legally allowed to get married in the state of PA without going the K1 route? I am planning on returning to Canada after we marry and then we will be going through the CR1 process.

Each state is different but people from all over the world get married in almost every state without any problems. The best thing to do is to contact them to find out what documentation you will need to bring with you to be legally married in PA.

^^Agreed, just check what ID PA requires for non-residents. We were married in North Caorlina and I had to sign an affidavit stating that I did not have a SSN; other than that all I needed was my Canadian passport. It is absolutely acceptable to marry and then return to Canada to complete the process. Good luck!

U can get married in PA. The marriage licence is $45 in cash. Mon - Fri 9am - 3:30pm. All you need is photo id (best is passport) and if you have been married before then you need your divorce certificate.

2/7/13 mailed I130 x 2

2/14/13 checks cashed $420 x 2

4/3/13 RFE more divorce info requested and marriage certificate(which I had already sent)

4/9/13 mailed additional info

4/19/13 I130 approved

5/10/13 NVC received

5/16/13 Called NVC and got Case #s and Invoice ID #s

5/17/13 USCIS website states: Your case can not be found at this time in My Case Status. Please check your receipt number and try again.

5/24/13 Paid AOS ($88.00) fee online

5/30/13 Emailed I-864 package for both kids

6/3/13 paid IV bill $230 x 2 kids

6/5/13 IV bill shows paid, DS260 available

You just can't go over the border with the "intent" to get married....

This is a common misconception.

Lots of people go to the States to get married - that's not a problem. You just can't cross the border with the intent of staying in the U.S. to live - without obtaining the correct visa first.
