here is what we remembered about the AOS interview questions. I am the USC and my husband, "C", is the applicant (foreigner).

the officer led us to her private office. she asked us to remain standing and she swore us in. She asked if C needed any translation. She asked me if i could translate, i said yes, and she told me to translate if needed.

She asked for ID from each of us. we gave our passports. (i dont know where my SS card is but she didnt ask for it.) she explained that she is removing C's I-94 from his passport I also gave me DL.

She asked us to sit. She had a file with our application and it seemed like she was already familiar with some of it. She started asking these questions:

to C: state your full name

C: your parents first names

C: your DOB

C: the city you were born in

C: is this the first time in the US for you (asked mulitple times)

to both: is this the first time you have been married? (asked multiple times)

to both: do you have any children? (asked multiple times)

to me: are you fluent in Spanish? (C's first language)

We gave her the photo album of the day we got the marriage license, and another one of things we had done together since October. She liked the wedding book and made of copy of the page when we said the vows. she asked C: what day was your marriage (date)? Where?

She returned the certified copy of our marriage license that we had submitted in our AOS application, saying we could keep it.

There are photos of our dog in the album, so she asked about the dog. She saw a picture of the dog with our cats, and she asked (in surprise) if the dog and cats got along. We started to talk a litttle bit about service dogs because we are both interested in that.

She had our I-485 in front of her and took a red pen and checked off each line on it as she asked C to confirm what we had written on it. she asked him to state our home address. at first he just gave our street number and she gently prompted him. he didnt know the zip code and i explained that his country doesnt use them. she didnt seem to mind that his answer was incomplete (i think we were lucky!)

She asked me what i do for a living. she asked if we somehow met b/c of my job. i explained i went to his country to kayak, and that he is a river guide, and we met through mutual friends. She asked when did we meet, and who proposed, and when?

She asked me for papers that show C as a beneficiary. I gave her documents showing him covered by my health insurance, and as a primary beneficiary of various things (finances) if i die. I did not have any bills in both of our names and she did not ask.

She looked at the letter from my employer and confirmed my monthly income. She asked a few questions about my job, my commute, and my schedule, and how long i have been a firefighter. she asked if we own or rent.

going back to the 485 form, she asked about what C does every day... work, take care of the house, take care of the animals? C answered he goes to school. she noted that she was making a change on the 485 to reflect that. we had typed "unemployed" and she changed it to "student". she asked about his school. she showed us the change she made and had him sign acknowledging it.

The whole thing took 15-20 minutes. She was relaxed and didn't seem out to get us. It was very different from the interview at the consulate. It felt like the decision was 80-90% made before we got there. When she was done, she said she had everything she needed and i was surprised, because i had more proof i didnt even get to show her. i asked, are you sure, we have more proof? and she said, and smiled, no that's fine, i think i have more than enough. you will get something in the mail in 10 days. we had already told her that we received C's EAD (employment authorization document) in the mail that very morning, and she told us to send it back when we get the green card b/c it will be redundant. so it really sounded like he is getting the green card no problem. and we did- within about 7-10 days we recieved a letter saying it was approved and that a card would come in the mail shortly. Within another 2 wks, he got the card itself, "permanent resident", good for 2 years.

Si, man! From your account, though, the grilling sounded like it took hours, not just 20 minutes. After the consulate, though, ANYthing would've been a piece of cake, si man? :)

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

CONGRATULATIONS!

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.

That's awesome!

My guy is from Ecuador too, from around the Tena area! We have our interview in Houston this Thursday, and I'm a bit worried as I supposed everyone is. Reading your post has given me hope. I get so nervous about these things, and always think we are going to be missing something.

But, I must agree, that the interview we had at the consulate in Guayaquil was extremely stressful, and took forever! We were in the waiting room for about 7 hours....and the lady who interviewed us, was definitely out to get us. It was very nerve wracking!!

Well congrats!!

Oh by the way, my friend is from San Diego, and is also going though this process, she is also married to an ecuadorian who was a Kayak guide and white water rafting guide.
