Problems applying for SSN today?

Hi everyone,

I've just returned from the local Social Security office after having waited 2 weeks from entering the US on my K1 fiance visa.

I went down there and had all the right documentation following the guide of the step-by-step guide to SSN on VJ.

I must admit the overall impression I got from the lady behind the counter was that she didn't have a clue what was going on. She took 10 mins to realise that my K1 visa was issued AFTER my B1/B2 tourist visa....

then she said we will need to send this off to immigration for verification. :(

Am I not right but in the guide on VJ, it says if you are on the SAVE-AVI system (which I was) you don't need manual verification from USCIS.... as this adds weeks on to the timeline in getting your SSN? I told the lady that but she said the system wouldn't let her apply for a SSN until manual verification was sought from immigration......

so has the rules changed here? are all applications needing manual verification from USCIS now?

also I was a little worried when she commented "it seems that there may be a problem with your immigration status" !!!! :(

she said that the status showed "UU" and that she had never seen that before! great eh??

and so can anyone help me with any of this, has anyone had a similar personal experience? I've been following the SSN guide very strictly and so I don't understand why I'm in this position. (oh by the way I got a temp EAD from JFK when I entered at the POE)

any help would really soothe my worries

I'm sorry to here about the problem.. hope someone got the similar situation and share it with u.

On my part.. I already have my SSN from the last stay in the US so i need to just change my name. But they need to see my EAD card first so i have to wait for my EAD card until i can apply for change of name on my SSC. Then after i got my EAD... I went there again and the lady said that they have to verify my documents with the USCIS too... it took them 4 weeks to send me my new SSC. (the only similarity with your story is they need to check mine with USCIS too :D ) and i also got my temp EAD from JFK.

K-1 = 4 months

AOS = 5 months

I-751 = almost one year

My husband had been entered in the SAVE system, but was entered incorrectly (they made a mistake on his visa type and typed in a kind of visa that doesn't exist). We tried to go to the POE and get it changed in the system, which they claimed they had done, but he still needed manual verification anyway.

We got the SSN about 5 weeks later. It was a pain in the neck.

James and I waited over 4 weeks after he got into the USA to apply for his SSN and he still was not in their system. So basically, it's all screwed up and we have to wait for a long time as well :P

Did they try both your A# and I-94#?

Being in the SAVE system for verification purposes means more than just being there.

1. Your name must be spelled right allowing for one letter to be incorrect

2. Date of birth must be totally correct

3. Eligibility line must have “Temporary Employment Authorized”

4. Immigration status needs to match immigration document

Immigration status UU/Unknown normally shows Eligiblity as "Institute Additional Verification" which means send the G-845.

yes it seems that everyone says that you are very experienced in this area mdyoung!!

which helps a lot..... but sorry if i am sounding really stupid...........it's pretty late here.......

so in basic english do you think I got a manual verification because my details on the system might not have been entered correctly by a POE officer??

sorry to sound like an idiot, I just am a little confused as to why I got this...

I would say based on what you said, yes they have sent off the G-845 for manual verification.

Suggest that you go back to the SSA office no more that once week with your documents to (1) ask them to check SAVE again (2) ask if they sent a G-845 (3) if yes, did it come back (4) after 30 days ask if they have followed up on the G-845 by calling or sending another mark “second request.”

When checking SAVE have them try the A# and I-94# since they said your immigration status is showing UU.

You can try calling the SSA Regional Office if you have waited at least 30 days and your local SSA office doesn't seem to be concerned about following up on the G-845

Refer them to:

Step 6

DHS should respond to SSA within 15 federal work days after receiving the Form G-845. If DHS does not respond within 15 federal work days from the receipt of the G-845 from SSA, follow-up with the DHS, USCIS Immigration Status office. (Allow 15 days plus five additional federal work days of mail time for the G-845 to be received at and returned from DHS. Follow local practice to follow-up with DHS.

Some SSA offices have an arrangement with the DHS, USCIS office to telephone for the follow-up contact; other SSA offices send a copy of the original G-845 annotated “second request.”) If the DHS response is still not received within 15 federal work days after the follow-up contact (if the follow-up is by mail allow five additional federal work days of mail time for the G-845 to be received at and returned from DHS), make a second follow-up contact. If the DHS response is not received within 15 federal workdays (again, if the follow-up is by mail, allow five additional federal work days of mail time for the G-845 to be received at and returned from DHS), after two follow-ups, contact the Regional Office (RO). Also report to the RO any trend that shows a serious deviation by DHS from the above time frames. The RO will consult with central office.
