Hello!

Elevated blood sugar in pregnancy is a case-to-case basis. Pregnancy hormones make the body resistant to insulin which controls blood sugar levels...more so if there is a family history of diabetes. Advanced maternal age can also cause this. My blood sugar was elevated, too, and they had me undergo a 3-hour test to try to confirm this. In my case though, my 3-hour test had odd results and I had to self-monitor my blood sugar 3 times daily after each meal. 1.5 months later, my blood sugar monitoring has been ok and I have stopped monitoring altogether, just doing a spot check every now and then. Note, though, that even if your friends' sugar levels are normal, it still isn't a good idea to have such a sweet tooth during pregnancy as it can result in a baby's big birth weight.

Sad to say, but there are still tests to undergo, depending on how your pregnancy turns out. Hopefully, all will be fine.

Hello!

We do not have any history of diabetes. I'm still young (26). I've already quit eating sweet foods like soda, cookies, cakes, and even carbs. It just drives me crazy that I have to go through all these test since they cost so much. I'm going to check with the local hospital if they can give me discount for all these test since we can't afford them. Money can go somewhere else like house bills.

I was wondering pwede ba hindi mag-undergo nung ibang test? Ang dami kasi... I have another one scheduled for Dec 25-30th.... para makita daw kung nag-sarado ung spinal cord. Un ang pag-kakaintindi ko. Just wondering... I know hindi ito ginagawa sa Pinas... hindi naman siguro 'life and death' ito?

So far wala namang maraming lab test na ginawa sa akin aside from urine test every OB visit ko, so far yung blood test isang beses palang ginawa nung first visit ko and regular ultrasound which is twice palang (transvaginal nung first visit tapos yung 2D ultrasound on my 22 weeks). We decline the extra testing for Down's syndrome and blood test called AFP-4 which screens for Down syndrome as well as spinal cord defects which we thought its not necessary. Sabi naman ng OB ko those tests are not mandatory. I also decline the STD test kasi kakapa STD test ko palang bago ako dumating dito as required on medical exam which was 3 months ago nung nabuntis ako and also the papsmear kasi last papsmear ko was March this year.

Ano ano ba ang mga test na ginagawa sayo? Mahal talaga ang mga lab test dito, sa akin nga iba pa yung charge ng OB ko tapos i cha charge pa ko ng hospital. You better ask kung its really necessary to have all those test pero kung makabubuti naman sayo go for it.

Buti nalang na mention ni Doc Gracey na di rin mabuti ang pagkain ng sweet during pregnancy as it can result to a baby's weight. Buti nalang di talaga ako mahilig sa sweets, minsan lang kapag nag ki crave ng pancakes with syrup on top.

Thanks sa info. I'm going to talk to my doctor and tell her I don't want to do the unnecessary spinal cord test and down syndrome. Husband wasn't with me on my first visit kaya di ko gaano alam kung ano ba ang normal dito. So far, I got HIV, STD, Urine Test, at blood sugar. Kelangan ko daw bumalik for the blood sugar 3 hour test. I'm looking into getting an Emergency Medicaid din... sana ma-approve ako dun. Then I will be asking for financial assistance from the Catholic church that runs the hospital. :-)

June ang due date ko. I can't wait to know the sex of my baby!

Bata ka pa naman at wala naman yata kayong lahing me Down Syndrome kaya its not necessary pero if you want to make sure that the baby is fine its up to you. The OB wouldnt mind if you decline, she might just asked you to sign a paper that you are not doing those tests.

Pag 18-22 weeks mo pa malalaman ang sex ng baby mo, napaluha nga ako nung ultrasound ko esp. when the doctor said everything was fine kinakabahan din kasi ako baka me makitang problem kay baby. Goodluck and God Bless!

they stick a gadget up your "hoo hoo" to capture a pic of your baby. Since too small pa ung baby to be detected with regular ultrasound. Congrats!

That would be fine for you to forgo those tests for genetic abnormalities owing to your age. Down's Syndrome isn't wholly hereditary though, nor are the other genetic diseases as other factors influence fetal development other than heredity. Can't say the same for the 3-hour test, though...kelangan talaga because gestational diabetes is really not good for the baby...I, too, do not have any history of diabetes in the family. I have not a choice about it since advanced maternal age na ako. I did the nuchal translucency test at 11 weeks with an accompanying blood test and that cost not less than $600. My first visit labs cost even more than that. Thankfully, we've paid off our OB's prepay (including the urinalysis that they do every check-up) so that we won't have to worry about paying every time we go for check-ups. The professional fees are all included in that up to the post-natal check. Mas magastos talaga manganak dito. But they do all that can be done to ensure that both mom and baby are okay. We're not rich but we were able to get health insurance prior to coming here. Am quite nervous about the hospital costs kasi even with insurance, it will go to at least $3500 for both my and the baby's bills. That would take a big chunk out of our savings. But that's how it is. Taking the risk in opting for a vaginal delivery with a chance of uterine rupture just doesn't sit well with us.

Just keep yourself healthy. Take your pre-natal vitamins and foods rich in folic acid, iron, protein, and calcium. Yes, you can have the occasional craving at times.

Ah thanks!! I have doc appointment on Dec 9. I'll ask my OB about forgoing the tests. The blood sugar though I think I might just do that... kinda worries me a bit. Hopefully everything will work out fine.

anyway, i'm on my 23rd week, normal lang ba yung painless contractions?
