Heard this in the airport ...

- Hey, are you brazilian?

- yes.

- so you speak brazilian?

- no, portuguese.

- oh! So you're portuguese!

After a lengthy marriage to a Brazilian, and oh, 8 or 10 visits to Brazil, my Portuguese remains pathetic.

Not to mention the fact that as a Canadian, I had to study French all the way through high school, and my French is pathetic too.

With the upshot that I dont' speak either, but rather my own unique "blend" of these two Romance languages where I substitute

words from either French or Portuguese where I have a gap in the language I'm pretending I'm speaking.

Add to that the fact that my French accent is Canadian, and my Portuguese accent is Nordeste (Recife), and I'm basically incomprehensible.

Better just to stick to English. Which is what I do.

Last time I was in Brazil in Dec I managed to avoid almost any Portuguese utterances at all. I just let the kids translate everything for me. Restaurant menus, taxi directions... that's what the kids are for. They're fluent.

My mistake was an honest one, either blame my geography teacher or forgive me for having been one of the kids in the back of class chatting about the weekend plans. Seriously though, it was an honest mistake, I actually really though Mexico was the northernmost central american country. :o

Oh, and I had a friend when I was an exchange student in AZ tell me she thought it was so odd to think that people could actually communicate in a language other than English, and I quote: "you know, like you say something in your language and they say it back and you actually know what the other is saying" to which I replied "Don't you take Spanish?" "Oh yeah, for 2 years now".

She just HAD to be blonde!!!
