The orginator of the image pays for the storage and bandwidth cost that the object incurs, not the person hotlinking.

This in turn causes the orginator to very, very upset with you, and sometimes will change the image to something "inapproriate", so instead of that "cute little kitten" image you snagged, they could insert porno.

That is why a lot of "photobucket" accounts get overloaded (and sucked dry of bandwidth) because somebody uses their image on a heavy traffic site...

Most sites have EULA that tell you "no hotlinking" - and it's easy for them to see who is doing it.
