I'm near Fort Worth..seems like EVERYTHING is closed now, doesn't it? My husband went to Wal-Mart yesterday around 8pm when it's usually buzzing..and he said it was eerily empty. Festivals are cancelled, I think this FTW school district closing sent the nation into a panic actually. We're getting out of here to Panama for the next week, where we can have a nice vacation..maybe things will have calmed when we come back..

They are saying if this H1N1 virus is like the 1918 H1N1 virus then you want to catch the first round of the more milder strain before it goes dormant because if it mutates and adapts which is what is suspected the next round will be as lethal as the 1918 one and the people that generally survived that one were the ones who already had the antibodies to fight it from the first round. Also when traveling or around a lot of people and you don't want to catch it they say to put a swab of neosporin in your nostrils or some antibiotic cream to reduce risk of inhalation of the virus. That is if you only breath through you nose.

Actually, if you look at the statistics, there are over 250,000 deaths from the "normal" flu each year. Although this strain is mutated, it is still proving less deadly than the normal strains. Reasonable precautions ie.. washing hands, covering mouth while sneezing, etc.. will help prevent the spread. It can be treated as well. Everyone keeps referring to the 1918 outbreak. One of the reasons it was so deadly was because the antibiotics could not be mass produced back then. The inovations of today allow us to be able to combat this.

That is true about the normal flu however the majority of those deaths are 65 and older. The reason there is cause for alarm with the H1N1 virus is it affects relatively healthy young people and spreads more rapidly. The CDC and WHO are saying they are more prepared for the H1N1 virus true however they are not prepared if it mutates like the 1918 virus.

There isn't enough Dr.'s and Nurse's or hospital beds to handle that kind of outbreak.
