ri May 1, 2009 11:28am EDT GENEVA (Reuters) - The World Health Organization said on Friday that tests had shown the current seasonal vaccine against flu would have little effect against the new H1N1 strain.

"There is very little chance that the seasonal vaccine ... will be effective against this particular virus," Marie-Paule Kieny, director of the WHO's initiative for vaccine research, told a news conference.

"We have no doubt making a successful vaccine is possible," she added, saying that it would still take between four and six months for the first doses to be available.

She said samples needed to make a vaccine would be ready to send to manufacturers by mid to late May.

Worldwide, 13 countries have confirmed cases of the virus that has killed as many as 176 people. Only one person has died outside Mexico: a toddler from Mexico who traveled to the United States.

Makes sense.

New virus, new vaccine.

I saw one report from the CDC saying it might help against the "human" part of the virus, but won't do anything for the avian/swine component.

My Advice is usually based on "Worst Case Scenario" and what is written in the rules/laws/instructions. That is the way I roll... -Protect your Status - file before your I-94 expires.

I wonder if they will have a seperate vaccine for this one, then the normal yearly one they make for the human flu bug?

Takes about 9 months to develop a specific vaccine, from what I heard. The hope is, at least for those countries heading into summertime, that the seasonal conditions will not facilitate the spread of the disease and a major outbreak will not really hit until the Autumn, when hopefully a vacine will be available. Not so sanguine for those countries heading for their 'Winter'.

They have not yet decided if it will be possible to mix in with the regular flu cocktail or it will require a separate vaccine.

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .
