(in Brit slang, "loo" is interchangeable with "WC")

And in India, it refers to a hot desert wind. In Maori culture it refers to the lint that gets stuck to your bellybutton from cheaply made (read 'Chinese') garments. In Rwanda, it refers to a specific manufacturing technique for machetes, intended to inflict maximum damage.

Wow, this librarian is impressed.... in Tibetan it refers to a certain class of snake-like beings known in Sanskrit as 'nagas' living below the ground who are belived to cause skin diseases and cancer - they also bring rain though so it's a fine balance keeping those critters happy.

In Hebrew "loo" means (roughly) "If-only" ... for example, there's a famous song from the Yom Kipppur War period, 1973, called "Lu Yhi" (or Loo Yhi, I suppose) which means "If only it were so". The theme of the song is essentially ... if only there were peace and good things etc etc

I get a certain satisfaction in being able to work in the themes of Hebrew, Israel, and peace into a thread that began with a rather inflammatory atavar (just scroll to the top if you missed it). I'm all in favor of a two-state solution for Palestinians and Israelis that recognizes the legitimate needs of both peoples. I rather doubt that's the sentiment the OP has in mind with that avatar.

איפה השרותים?

The Loo is around the corner and to the left

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.

"Our Wedding Prayer"

Lord, help us to remember when we first met,and the strong love that grew between us.

To work the love into practical things so nothing can divide us

Grant us a Love that grows stronger with each passing year.

We ask for words both kind and loving

and for hearts always ready to ask forgiveness as well as to forgive.

Guide us to overcome every challenge

and keep our dreams pure to each other always.

Dear Lord,we put our marriage into Your hands.Amen

If your heart acquires strength, you will be able to remove blemishes from others without thinking evil of them.

Was just in New Orleans a few weeks ago.

Supposedly it is the new "Murder Capital of the US"

everyone was still partying though...

I'm from there and I'm relatively sure it's ALWAYS been labeled that.

Of course, Seattle is the Suicide Capital of the US. Geez, what is it about places I live?

Wow, I used to live in Richmond, CA. Well...Point Richmond to be exact. It was technically a different town but...we shared the same zip code and Richmond was literally on the other side of the railroad tracks. Of course, it was a bit of a 'high end' town so that's where all the thugs from Richmond went to commit crimes. I had two different cars stolen on different occasions and broken into twice. My roomies all had had their cars broken into and our next door neighbor had a daytime home invasion. And that was only living there a year!

We moved to the Bay area in 1999, and lived there for 5 years. When I first started to look at housing in the area, knowing nothing about anything locally, I started out looking online. Needless to say everything seemed way out of our price range. But there were some listings for 'affordable' houses that seemed quite cute, with some online photos that looked very attractive .... in Richmond. So I convinced HER (then she was the beloved wife, now she's the nasty ex  ) to hop into the rental car and go look. We had lived in Toronto, and there's a reasonably well to do suburb north of TO called Richmond Hill, so the name 'Richmond' had positive connotations for me at that time, not negative stereotypes. Also, looking at a map Richmond seemed conveniently located just north of Berkeley and the Bay Bridge. Easy shot to SF or Oakland.

So anyway, it took only 20 minutes or so of driving around Richmond to realize that Richmond CA was nothing at all like Richmond Hill Ontario.

We wound up in the South Bay; rented for a year in Santa Clara and then bought a townhouse in Sunnyvale. In the 5 years we lived in the Bay area we heard plenty on the nightly news about the crime and gangs in Richmond. Very sad, hope it improves.

Now I live west of Chicago. Nearest 'crime' city on this list to me is Gary IN. Gary Gary Gary... what will we do about Gary?

Our hotel over the weekend was in North Charleston. My dad later said he would have been afraid to stay there because of the crime, but that's the first I'd heard of it. Seemed perfectly fine to me, at least near the interstate and areas we drove through. Parts of Columbia scare me more.

I'm the USC.
