U.S. edges left on many social issues

WASHINGTON, April 30 (UPI) -- Opposition to gay marriage, legal marijuana and a citizenship path for illegal immigrants is dropping in the United States, a poll released Thursday said.

The shift could deprive the Republican Party of issues it has used to rally voters in recent elections, The Washington Post said.

One of the biggest shifts has been on gay marriage. While 49 percent of those surveyed by the ABC News/Washington Post poll said gay marriage should be legal, 46 percent said it should be illegal. Three years ago, 58 percent opposed gay marriage while 36 percent said it should be legal.

White Catholics have moved far on the issue. In 2006, 60 percent wanted gay marriage banned and one-third said it should be legal -- that has shifted to 46 percent favoring legality and 47 percent opposed.

Gay marriage, marijuana and immigration may no longer be the hot button issues they once were, even for those whose views are unchanged, the Post said.

One issue on which public opinion appears to be moving in the Republican direction is gun control. Just over half, 51 percent, said gun laws should be tightened, down 10 points in three years.

I wouldn't call that inching left. It sounds like the American people are simply moving in the direction of less government interference in the personal lives of other Americans. Let the gays marry if they want, let people smoke pot if they want, let illegals stay if they want, and let them bear arms if they want. Sounds consistent to me.

Now all we need is a single political party that embraces all those values :)

Libertarian, perhaps? Ready to jump on the Glen Beck bandwagon yet?

One can be libertarian and be serious about it. Nuttiness is not a prerequisite.

He's not the complete package, but he is getting people talking, and that is a start. Nine years ago he was broke, and now he is working for sandwiches at FNC, or so he says.

Q: Glenn Beck trails only The O'Reilly Factor and Hannity in the cable news ratings. What should you do right now to take both of them down and rocket yourself to No. 1?

Beck: I do have a call in to ####### Cheney to take them hunting.

Q: Let's talk about the famous April 13 fainting, when a guest passed out while shaking your hand. Were you aware that a mere touch from you could put a man right to sleep?

Beck: Usually it's my voice, my topics, my looks, my general presence. But the handshake? No, I wasn't. I felt like Spock. It was good.

Q: Here's what Jon Stewart said about you: "Finally, a guy who says what people who aren't thinking are thinking." What do you think he meant by that?

Beck: Isn't it time that those people have a voice? I am their king.

ABC news....go figure.

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.

I think its more that people have more pressing concerns these days - re: the economy and keeping their jobs.

When your income and standard of living are at risk, other things become secondary.
