I go either way. I can drop my "the"s or not. I'm a born Canadian, but my Dad is English, so I'm bi-lingual. Actually, tri-lingual now, because I am almost fluent in Southern American. Which is a bit different than Yankee of course.

I've sort of figured out 'southern' from listening to my friends and in-laws . . . any word of one syllable is pronounced with two or three syllables and any word with two or more syllables is pronounced as one syllable. For example, "I'm tired" is "Ahem tard".

I always say "THE 95" when referring to a highway.. it drives my husband nutters...

It would drive me nutters too!!!! My husband drives me nuts when he talks about taking the "exit" when he is really just referring to turning off one road (NOT a highway) onto another road (also NOT a highway). That is not an exit, you are taking a right onto Main St.!!!! Argh!!!

and me, from california, calls any interstate in the US a freeway, and the ones that are called actual highways, are just highways.
