Just curious, do Canadians typically use "the" as Americans do ("I'm going to the hospital")

or less as the English do ("I'm going to hospital")?

Americans say "take me to THE hospital", English say, "take me to hospital", and Canadians say, "Take me to the bar, a few pints will fix it".

eYep, they invented the language, and that's the way they talk. I lived in London for a few years (loved it) and always felt like I should keep a pocket full of "THEs" to give to my friends. Maybe not grammatically correct in North America...again, they created the language. But seriously, it sounds as if there's only one hospital, or university in the UK.

Totally on a tangent here, but that reminds me. I met my wife for the first time in Windsor (Canada). Flew in to Detroit and drove across. Anyway - so the next day I ask the hotel how to get somewhere. They said, "take the highway". Now I'm from Jersey. So my next question is, which one? I'm expecting a number. Route 1? Route 18? Route 22? 28? 287? 440? 43? 12?

There's a lot of different sayings in the states as well. In Chicago, the fast food places will ask, "Will that be for HERE or to GO".

In NYC, they ask, "For here or to take away". Kind of freaked me out the first time I heard it. I think in the UK it's "Dine in or take away".
