The result is in strong contrast with Europe, where both taxes and spending are notably higher. Counting all levels of government (federal, state, and local), government revenues in the U.S. are about 33 percent of GDP, compared with 45 percent in Europe; spending stands at 38 percent of GDP in the U.S. and 46 percent in Europe.

So, we still have a long ways to go before we are as screwed up as Europe? Well, we better get a move on then! 2mo5pow.gif

When it comes to education, healthcare or mass transit - we should be striving to be number one, don't you think?

Perhaps the American experiment was a failure, and now, we have to bow again to our European masters? I repeat:2mo5pow.gif

American experiment? Does the Republican Party have a patent on that term?

It was a Frenchman that coined that term, I believe, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tocqueville#D...racy_in_America

"The American Republic will endure until the day Congress discovers that it can bribe the public with the public's money"

Yes, when a Democrat President forges economic policy, it's not American. Gotcha.

What failed America was the creation of the welfare state, the social contract, and the end of personal responsibility.

So America has failed?

We the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.

How did the Old America do?

establish justice - B+ (good for the most part, a few blemishes)

insure domestic tranquility - C+ (quite a few major problems, our inner cities are anything but 'tranquil')

common defense - A+

promote general welfare - C- (too many people who can't read, who can't afford the basics and don't have health care)

Maybe the New America will do better? Domestic tranquility and general welfare could use some work, don't you think? :)

Man is made by his belief. As he believes, so he is.

I can see how getting rid of poor houses was so objectionable. To be honest, I would love to see them brought back, and those orphanages run by nuns, and how about getting rid of all those stupid rules and regulations that are holding back our industry? Industry can't forge ahead fettered by mindless rules designed to keep workers safe and happy, what a bunch of hocus pocus. Seriously, it's ###### up!

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

Not yet. But give Obama time. After all, he has only been in office 101 days.
