Saved up some money for the move to the U.S. my husband and I (both residing in Japan) still find moving costs to be expensive.

Visa fees, shipping personal items, plane ticket(s), miscellaneous expenses... You name it, they are all expensive.

How much did you, your spouse/fiance, and/or other family member(s) spend from filing your visa petition to your arrival to the U.S.?

I'm guessing at around the 6-7 thousand dollar mark. Between the visa, his travel to Montreal for the interview, relocating to Florida (including shipping some of our stuff) etc etc.

Just a plane ticket. Everything my wife owned fit into a carry on bag, and the duffle and box she checked in as luggage. So the actual move was less than $1,000. If you add the fees and remittances, that was probably another $1,000 to $2,000. My trip to visit with her, and meet the family, was the most expensive part of the journey.

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

For the visa and related expenses, actual moving expenses (the movers, posting stuff, a few penalties for shutting off services early etc), and plane tickets, around 4000 dollars. We were lucky in that the twins were just starting a new growth/ developmental phase at 8 months old, so we were able to leave behind most of their clothes and toys (and sell some of it), and buy new here, which was actually cheaper than shipping it. We also sold most of our furniture over there- it wasn't antiques or anything, so not worth shipping, and we didn't make much money from it, but it did defray some of the cost.

  • 3 months later...

I've successfully got my IV and settled down in the US.

Having calculated all the expenses I spent for my IV, shipping and plane tickets for my husband and myself (both lived in Japan), I finally figured out how much this journey cost.

$1100 for my IV, $2600 for shipping stuff, and $2000 for plane tickets. $5700 in total was a little more than what I expected, but it was good we saved up for the move.

I am a penniless immigrant now...
