Hi Everyone,

Once I have my visa ( IF....) and I travel to the States, can I have a layover or do I have to reach the final destination straight away?

Example:

I want to go to Nevada, but I fly through NY first, to get on the plane to Las Vegas.

Would that be ok? Or would they stop me in NY and I would have to stay there?

Also, another question, about the marriage certificate and the SSN.

Do you go and get your marriage certificate BEFORE the ceremony or after?

Can I apply for them in Nevada, eventhough my fiance's adress is in Colorado? It's not where we will live but it is the adress they have on file...

Could I go to any office in the States or does it have to be in the State where the US fiance resides?

I know I am thinking ahead and I don't even know if they will give me my visa, but I can't help it...! :)

And I am so confused!

Thanks a lot for any help!

Take care!!

Hi there,

You can absolutely have a layover in another state before reaching your final destination. As long as you don't enter the country, process the K1 at a POE and then LEAVE the country again, it's no problem. Many people have their POE at a place other than their destination.

You apply for a marriage license before the wedding. Each state/county is different. For some it has to be at least 3 days before the wedding, some it doesn't matter, etc. Have your fiance check the laws in the place you're getting married.

Good luck!

Ah thank you so much! That is great news!

And we can get married in a different state than the one my fiance resides in? That won't be an issue?

What about the social security number? Can I apply for it anywhere in the States?

Thanks!

Also, the marriage LICENSE permits you to get married, after which you can receive a marriage CERTIFICATE.

Suggestion for the future: My bride & I asked the Justice of the Peace if we could hand-carry the (newly signed) marriage license to the courthouse ourselves; he agreed, and we did. While standing there, we ordered SEVEN certified copies of the marriage certificate, at $7 each. The clerk had never had anyone want so many, but she nicely complied. Now, after having applied for AOS, making the bank account joint, giving a keepsake certificate to Mom, etc., we have exactly two copies left. I personally believe that it's prudent to have MORE copies of official documents than appears necessary, because at some stage of immigration or regular life, these documents WILL come in handy.

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

Then NY-JFK would be your point of entry. They will process you there and you are free to travel where you want in the USA.

You get a marriage license BEFORE the ceremony, you get the marriage certificate AFTER the ceremony. You can apply for the SSN at any office nationwide, it is a federal government program, it is the same the country over. May I suggest the office in Burlington Vermont, which has trained clerks that know K-1 visa holders are entitled to a SSN right away. You must get the marriage license in the state, county or city where you will marry.

YES, you can get married in any state. BUT you must comply with the rules for marriage of that state. If they have a 3 day waiting period, for example, or require witnesses you will have to comply with those provisions.

just make sure you dont have a quick connecting flight to Nevada. you need to clear immigation at JFK and then go through customs with all of your checked bags. then you will need to switch terminals (international at JFK is term 4) to get your flight to nevada...you will need to recheck your baggage. id give yourself a minimum of 4-5 hours before your scheduled flight...it may take longer if they question you.

Like other advices, get the connecting flight with 4-5hours transit within USA. You may face a long line in the immigration first checkpoint or deal with your baggage or spend more time in the secondary inspection area.

You can marry anywhere in US.Marriage is a good bussiness in Nevada. They will just ask for the valid picture ID and money in cash for getting the license. The courthouse for getting the marriage license will open all weekend (friday 8am to sunday 12AM), Monday-Thursday 8am-12pm.There are many couples getting the marriage license there from different states and countries. Once you getyour license, there are many wedding chapel people waiting for you outside to help you with the marriage as soon as possible. :-) After getting married, get your certified copies in the courthouse the following day. Even if you don't have time to get ones, many letters will be mailed to you to help you on getting the certified copies.

About the SSN,some states may give SSN to the K1 visa holder without the EAD or green card. Unfortunately, in some other states, you may have some difficulties and even denial for the SSN before your EAD/green card. The SSN should be taken from the nearest local office of your residency.

we just make a photocopy of the certified document... so far.. I may have made 7 photocopies but I still have the one and have only needed the one certified document...

YMMV

My wife applied for the SSN 16 hours after she arrived. She had the card itself in 6 days and the number the next business day. It is listed on our marriage lisence issued 8 days after she arrived. You can apply for an SSN anywhere in the USA. You can get married the same day you arrive, if you want. How long it takes is up to you (and possibly a waiting period in the state where you marry)
