From what I collect from the original poster, he applied for removal of conditions on residency but instead got one year extension ?

This is normal. When you file to remove conditions it is expected to take some time before the processing is completed. You are allowed to file 90 days before your green card expires but it is not expected that you would have your approval before the green card expires. So, USCIS sends an NOA acknowledgement letter that contains a statement that the letter extends the validity of your green card for one year and is valid for both work and travel purposes. You carry this letter along with your green card to prove you are a legal resident while you wait for the 10 year green card. So, the OP originally got an extension letter and then when his file was approved, he received an approval letter to be followed very quickly by the 10 year green card.
