I can forgive Obama the odd stammer or wrong word here and there.

He's still a better public speaker than George W Bush - by a very long way. I gave up watching W's press conferences when he was Pres - they used to be funny, but he gaffed so often that I think he actually lowered the standard for what people expect from their public officials.

At no point did Bush ever seem as though he had a handle on what he was being asked; and while I think that journalists generally expect B/S answers from politicians at press conferences - "W" was consistently unable to demonstrate that he actually understood the issues to provide a halfway convincing answer to the questions asked.

It was embarassing to watch tbh - and I'm not a USC.

Obama does have a stammer, but to openly mock what very well may be a condition is in poor taste. For anyone really interested in the content, there was plenty of substance in what he said to feed the mind. It's too bad that some prefer a President with a swagger in his voice vs. one who can actually articulate a thought.

oh ... so it's now not in fashion to pick on the prez?

oh well ... must be nice to have a mirror that only shows what you want to see.

articulate a thought.

Is that what you want to call it?

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.

I think the focus should always be on what a person says rather than how they say it.

As I say though - Bush's problem was not that he was a bad public speaker, it was that he clearly (and quite obviously) did not understand the issues to answer the questions he was asked. As someone who is supposed to lead the nation, and is in a sense a primary definer for those issues (at least as far as the public discourse goes) it was pretty embarrassing that he was unable to do it.

Yep. Good description.

Seriously - all politicians bullsh!t and dance around the issues to avoid answering direct questions directly. I can however tell a difference between Obama and Bush in that regard.

Its not that Obama is "better" in that respect, he's not. If anything he's pretty much what people have come to expect from career politicians.

Its Bush who was substandard.

Read Private Pike's last post. Making fun of a physical affliction like a stutter or stammer is in poor taste no matter who the target is. But please continue, Natty - it's says volumes of your character.

i agree he does AAAAA a lot, but then again... a lot smarty-pants academic types do that...

i think it may be either you're one to use "space fillers" or you're not.

it could be worse, he could being saying "like" all the time.

prepared speeches sound much better. he doesn't appear to have these problems.

when speaking his words are not part-syllable repetition, sound prolongation, or silent fixation, he does not show any real struggle in getting his words. only has problems getting his thoughts out.

meanwhile ... it was okay to speak tomes about the previous prez (during/ after his terms) ... now you suddenly have a conscious? did you kidnap jiminy cricket?

but here is the real question:

if you were his student in the university, would you...

a) not notice this oratory tic

B ) fall asleep during the lecture

c) say to yourself #######, why am i paying all this $$ when this guy can't even say what he's tryin to say.. this is some bull, i should have taken Early Roman History.

Conscience seems to be the word you are looking for there Natty. Conscious is something else - a state of being (as opposed to being Unconscious) that has nothing to do with whether or not one has a conscience. Though of course it helps to be conscious to make use of a conscience.

As I said - Obama is typical of what people expect from career politicians. Bush was substandard. Originally people listened to what Bush said, until they realised that he, in fact, had nothing to say - at which point more emphasis was placed on how he said things. The two were connected imo.

But you want to have a laugh at Obama - feel free. Its no skin off my nuts.

 The only speech impediment Obama has is foot in mouth disease. He is not comfortable adlibbing. He misses his teleprompter.
