Autism Linked to Genes That Govern How the Brain Is Wired

The largest genetic study of autism ever attempted — involving more than 3,000 participants from AGRE, 1,453 cases from other sources and over 7,000 additional control subjects — identified genetic variations in a region of chromosome 5 that appears to play a pivotal role in about 15% of cases of autism. What makes this region particularly fascinating is that it seems to regulate gene-coding for proteins that are essential to forming connections in the brain. This fits well with earlier research — including imaging and autopsy studies — that suggest autism is essentially a disorder of poor connections in the brain.

The number of cases have increased dramatically in the last decade and nobody as any conclusive evidence as to why this has happened. Jenny McCarthy has an autistic boy and was on Larry King a couple of weeks ago talking about it. She believes that the increased number of inoculations now given to all toddlers is one of the culprits.

There still may be a connection as dormant genes can be triggered by environmental factors. In any case, it's a serious problem that deserves to be thoroughly researched. I am just crossing my fingers that my little toddler hasn't shown any signs of autism so far.

Just yesterday on Law & Order they had an episode (quite a sh1tty one) about this. My take? Vaccinate your kids damnit.

I truly wonder if there is a rise in autism, or if it's just being misdiagnosed more often. There are PLENTY of doctors out there who are more than ready to diagnose a child with autism when they may just have some sensory disorders, for instance. The symptoms are often the same as they can be over or under responsive to stimulation and sometimes have tactile defensiveness just like autistic kids do.

Im just not sold on the idea that there has been such a rise in autism, I think there has been a rise in autism happy diagnosing. Not to say it isnt rising, just not on the level that its made out to be.

We did, but I honestly was scared what it might do. The claim isn't the vaccinations themselves, the number of them given at once, which has increase over the last decade - that the combination is overwhelming to a toddler's immune system. From what Jenny McCarthy was saying - the U.S. currently is the only country that is giving such a high number of vaccinations.
