Oh, I get it now.

We have the same thing here in Borneo where they term Caucasians as either 'orang putih' or 'mat salleh'. Orang putih literally translated means 'white man' and Mat Salleh was a caucasian guy that was accepted by the locals here and given a local name afaik. I have to do research on my history  But yeah, they used to say I talked like an 'orang putih' after I came back from London growing up there, so I understand now.

And for some reason I never linked 'haoli' to Haole's forum handle. Ah, just woke up and still disoriented.

I was toying with the idea of having a fun picnic/cookout by the beach with his family after the ceremony. Not too keen on having a lavish indoor event as I want to stick to things being natural. Unless there's a nice beach restaurant somewhere.

We did a casual dinner reception at sunset here: http://www.the-beach-house.com/

Loved the food, we were seated in the lower surf lanai area and the view was spectacular. Just the 8 of us there so we had the whole area to ourself but it can definitely seat more if you are having a bigger wedding party. It's in Poipu which is on the south shore and not far if you're choosing to have the wedding on the west. Cookout by the beach sounds really fun though.. we had a chef come and cook for us at our rental the night before for the rehearsal and I loved how laid back and relaxed it was - great food from him too.

re: chairs on the beach. Last I heard they were not allowed. But since you're going with a package and will have access to a coordinator best to check with them as they should know the most updated rules. Same goes with having a cookout on a public beach

And you won't get your marriage certificate immediately after the wedding. Here it says it will take 60-120 days http://hawaii.gov/health/vital-records/vit...iage/index.html We couldn't wait this long as we were moving between countries and needed it for my husband's Aussie spousal visa so we ended up doing a quick paper marriage first before having the ceremony in Kauai.

According to these links all beach weddings from August 2008 onwards in Hawaii require a permit:

still looking for a link about the chair rule

nevermind, I think the permit permits you to have chairs, archs, etc

oh and I read another Kauai bride filed for an expedite & payed the fee for their marriage certificate and received it in 30 days. Still not immediate but better than 60-120 days!

Thanks for the info Kaffy (F)

I had come across the beach restaurant you linked earlier today. If all else fails, was planning to do it there. I doubt caterers would wanna do the 5 mile dirt road to Polihale. That or we could have a chef cook out for us at our lanai and invite his family to dine with us there although I don't think he would like that idea. He wants complete privacy at our place!

Oh, just wondering. How long does it take by car to get from Lihue Airport to Princeville? And from the west side to the south? I have no clue on how big Kauia is generally.

Princeville (north) to Lihue (east) is about 50 mins

Lihue(east) to Poipu (south) is about 30 mins

Poipu (south) to Waimea (west) is about 30 mins

thats if my memory serves me correct.. Haole might know more accurate times

I FOUND A BEACH!

Polihale beach on the west coast sounds AMAZING. I love that its wild, remote and spiritual.

Whoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

I talked to my brother who lives in Haena today and he said the road to Polihale has been closed do to wash outs for quite a while. Wasn't sure if it was open or not yet.

There is a beach front restaurant in Haena that may still do weddings. It used to be Charo's and I managed it awhile. It's called the Mediterranean

Cafe.

Beautiful spot. I used to live about a 1/4 mile from it.

30 miles from Lihue to Princeville. Used to take me 40 minutes. Now about 1 hour. Traffic sucks there now.

LOTS of vaccination rentals the Haena area. My old house is probably one. Hanalei Colony Resort is nice also right next to the restaurant. Units have kitchens also.

I found this today. It looks like it recently reopened!

I have also heard of the Mediterranean restaurant from here. Tried looking for some budget caterers but none of them appear to have a website online. Bummer. So it looks like its either a cook out on the beach (which I think a permit should allow) or dining at one of the beach restaurants.

PS: I don't think the commute is all that bad. We're quite used to long commutes, both of us.
