Hi,

I have a friend who is currently applying for security clearance for federal jobs. She does not know whether she is dual citizen or not as she just received her passport last year and did not apply for dual citizenship in the Philippine Embassy. Now the questions is:

1.Once she renounced her citizenship:

a. Will she be able to acquire back the filipino citizenship someday?

b. Will she lose the property that she already have in the philippines?

2. When she received her US citizenship, did she automatically lose her filipino citizenship or does she have to renounce it? Does her passport still valid?

I told her about visa journey, but she said she does not have time to sit down and research in the internet..so I am doing this for her.

I know there is someone here who used to be in the law practice, i just forget her name..i hope she can read this post.

YES, she can re-acquire her citizenship back. Uhmm... i think it is called Repatriation.

b. Will she lose the property that she already have in the philippines? NO, I don't think so. Unless, she sells them.

2. When she received her US citizenship, did she automatically lose her filipino citizenship or does she have to renounce it? Does her passport still valid?

YES, under the Philippine law... you can only have one allegiance. When she took the oath of allegiance to the US government, she lost her Phil. Citizenship. Dual citizenship only happens when by operation of two laws, you acquire two citizenship. Ie. A baby is born by a Filipino Mother in America. By blood, he is a Filipino Citizen and By Place of Birth he also acquires US Citizenship. Your friend does not possess two citizenship if she was naturalized in the US.

I told her about visa journey, but she said she does not have time to sit down and research in the internet..so I am doing this for her.

Yes Under R.A. 9225

b. Will she lose the property that she already have in the philippines? No unless she acquired them after she has become an AMerican citizen.

2. When she received her US citizenship, did she automatically lose her filipino citizenship or does she have to renounce it? Does her passport still valid? Yes under the reasons provided by tngirl

I told her about visa journey, but she said she does not have time to sit down and research in the internet..so I am doing this for her. This is a very crucial matter which she MUST find time to sit down and research so she will fully comprehend what will happen.

I know there is someone here who used to be in the law practice, i just forget her name..i hope she can read this post.
