What to say in interview re: employment

I'm preparing for an interview in Montreal. (the waiting is brutal some days)

As I read interview posts, it becomes apparent that the Montreal officials seem to ask/inquire about employment.

Here's my dilemma. I own my own corporation in Canada and am a significant shareholder and (unpaid) officer of a new US corporation that is getting started before I arrive so I have a US business to replace my Canadian one.

How exactly do I prove I won't be working? I won't/can't take a paycheck from my US company until I employment authorization. But, if they understand entrepreneurs, I work even when i am sleeping sometimes.

So if they say... what are you going to do in the US? I won't say "look for a job in X" cause that would be lying. If I say, going to set up a company... that's working isn't it - even if I don't get paid?

My Canadian corp will be shutting down by end of July... but I won't be taking a paycheck from it either cause officially, I can't work for it either in the US once I get me K1.

I'm uncertain as to what direction I should take if this question were to come up.

Any thoughts, experiences or advice would be appreciated.

Cheers!

I'm not sure about Montreal specifically, but I'm under the impression that they typically ask about employment of the USC. But in any case you should just be honest and short in your answer. You don't have to go into specific details. But you can say that in Canada you started your own business doing xyz and once you are in the US you will look to open a similar business.

I had nothing lined up, and told the interviewer that. I said i would most likely go to school, but had no definite plans

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

From my understanding, they are only interested in the income of the USC. They may ask your plans in passing, but it's not critical.

Be as honest as you can. You never know what they already know. I would agree with reeses: let them know you are hoping to open a new business (like the one you have in Canada) and say that will spend your time prior to getting the work permit researching the market and the legalities about your type of businesses.

Remember, what they consider work is doing a service, paid or unpaid, that someone with work authorization would normally receive wages for.

I don't remember them asking anything about employment...just an fyi. It's a 5 -10 minute interview, they ask a lot less then you'd expect...more along the lines of how did you meet, how long have you known eachother...I can't even remember all the details, they were such mundane questions

I'm the Canadian citizen and they asked me what I was going to do when I moved to the U.S. So it's a valid question. I also agree with Krikit. You can get a business set up. They just don't want you generating income while you're not authorized.
