In 2005 Republican controlled Congress was considering a multi-billion dollar purchase of Tamiflu

You might also remember that in 2005 the GOP was hot for avian flu vaccine, wanting to take extreme preparation measures for a flu that had only killed a handful of people worldwide. Back then the Pentagon leapt to order $58 million worth immediately and the Republican controlled Congress was considering a multi-billion dollar purchase of Tamiflu, driving expectations for "sales in 2005 to be about $1 billion, compared with $258 million in 2004."

Coincidentally this benefited Rumsfeld and other well connected politicos like Reagan's former Secretary of State George Shultz and former GOP governor of California, Pete Wilson, who all had financial interests in the company that made the vaccine. They all made considerable sums of money. So what changed between 2005 and 2009, besides the political party in control of Congress?

so it was a bad idea then, but a good idea now. got it.

 I think you've got your wires crossed.

Not so much. Tamiflu is now being recommended for avoiding this swine flu "epidemic". No lie.

the only real difference between then and now is it's the dems saying to take it. and we know how well they have america's best interests at heart :hehe:

I would imagine selling enormous quantities of flu vaccine would be a huge stimulus to the pharmaceutical companies and maybe the wider economy. Personally, I am not that keen on pharmaceutical companies, they are disingenuous at best. Talking of such companies, it'll soon be the 50th anniversary of that notorious scandal, thalidomide. Hard to believe, isn't it?
