This or the Passat SportWagen would make my husband a very happy man.

I don't consider anything below 50 mpg a "fuel efficient car".

How about the small european (mostly french) cars that get more than 60 mpg?

My ex in Germany drove a VW Golf TDI that was built in the early 90's, that car already got more than 50 mpg!

Be careful with your measurements. US gallons and European gallons aint the same. When I first came over here I thought the fuel economy was terrible. advertising in the 20-25mpg range!! It is however the differnece in gallon size, America has to be different.

Not a single car on that list that I would consider purchasing. I'll stick to Audi, they know how to make automobiles properly.

Are you a mechanical engineer?

Note: A mechanic is not the same as a mechanical engineer.

The point I'd like to make is that the assertion that they don't know how to make cars is kind insulting to any engineer whether they're electrical, computer, or mechanical.

Not an insult, just a statement of preference. They don't know how to make cars to my liking. Only one "Green" car manufacturer has produced a car to my satisfaction and that is a Tesla. Unfortunately they are far too expensive for my budget. The BMW 335d is nice inside, however, they seriously compromise their engine performance for the fuel economy. That is a breaking point for me.

My first car, a 1978 Ford Fiesta, was rated at 46mpg, and I actually measured 42-50mpg. It would take second place on that list, 31 years later. My slightly more recent 1995 Honda Civic VX (non-hybrid) was rated at 47 city, 51 hwy. You'd think modern hybrids could do better, but most can't. It doesn't seem like things have been improving very much in the past few decades from the fuel efficiency standpoint.

Modern cars do have more cupholders, though.

Yeah...what happened to that know-how for Detroit? They've been claiming that they can't reach those kinds of mpg's if they tried? I don't think the Fiesta was a fluke.
