Almost scammed

Cutco Cutlery was a great company awhile back. They were probably bought out or sold like so many other companies.

You must screen the online job offers carefully. Many are for insurance salesman, vacuum cleaner salesmen, or high turnover jobs.

Hi,

I see that you're in Fremont. Mmmm I'm sure there's some job openings there and the cities nearby like Milpitas and San Jose. I've seen several job openings that have are not bad (seen several openings for star$). Also maybe you can try for Great America? the park just recently opened and I'm sure there's several opportunities.

Don't lose hope ^^

(F) (F) same here good thing research google before encashing check.. ( cashiers check and money order ) for a caregiving and housekeeping job in craigslist last year received by ups expedite mail scenario is.. they will request you to encash the money order wired a certain amount to certain place

(the employer, shipper, cyber-soulmate, businessman, etc.) via western union.. and then wholah you got screwed.

* DEAL LOCALLY WITH FOLKS YOU CAN MEET IN PERSON - follow this one simple rule and you will avoid 99% of the scam attempts on craigslist.

* NEVER WIRE FUNDS VIA WESTERN UNION, MONEYGRAM or any other wire service - anyone who asks you to do so is a scammer.

* FAKE CASHIER CHECKS & MONEY ORDERS ARE COMMON, and BANKS WILL CASH THEM AND THEN HOLD YOU RESPONSIBLE when the fake is discovered weeks later.

* CRAIGSLIST IS NOT INVOLVED IN ANY TRANSACTION, and does not handle payments, guarantee transactions, provide escrow services, or offer "buyer protection" or "seller certification"

* NEVER GIVE OUT FINANCIAL INFORMATION (bank account number, social security number, eBay/PayPal info, etc.)

* AVOID DEALS INVOLVING SHIPPING OR ESCROW SERVICES and know that ONLY A SCAMMER WILL "GUARANTEE" YOUR TRANSACTION.

Who should I notify about fraud or scam attempts?

* FTC toll free hotline: 877-FTC-HELP (877-382-4357)

* FTC online complaint form (http://www.ftc.gov)

* Canadian PhoneBusters hotline: 888-495-8501

* Internet Fraud Complaint Center (http://www.ic3.gov)

* Software Piracy (http://www.siia.net/piracy/report.asp)

* Non-emergency number for your local police department.

Recognizing scams

Most scams involve one or more of the following:

* inquiry from someone far away, often in another country

* Western Union, Money Gram, cashier's check, money order, shipping, escrow service, or a "guarantee"

* inability or refusal to meet face-to-face before consumating transaction

I remember asking you what job you were applying for in your previous topic. I know for a fact that it is not that difficult to find a decent job in the bay area if you are not that choosy in most industries (even with a weaker job market now compared to last year's) but you must research the company thoroughly. Be wary of companies advertising jobs that don't specify requirements, job duties or no skills required. And when a company is interested in your application and call you for an interview, ask questions after they have interviewed you.

You may also look at temp. agencies. Again, research their reputation too.

Thank you. I applied for almost any position available that I am confident enough I can perform. I applied as store associate, cashier, customer service, teller, sales associate etc.. etc.. I can't really broaden my area of search for jobs because I don't have a driver's license yet. I only have a permit and going there means I have to either take a bus or taxi (which my husband don't mind) I also prefer working at night because at least he can take me to work and pick me up in the morning.

What avenue do you use in searching and applying for jobs, i.e. submitting your resume, for these job positions store associate, cashier, customer service, teller, sales associate? Do you search jobs at the company's (that you're interested in) website or do random search in sites like Monster Job, Career Builder and craigslist?

Thanks for the reply... I applied jobs to the company that I liked like Petco, Petsmart, Walmart, Macys, Target etc etc... I go to their website too. I joined Apple one but they turned me down. I saw that scam on Yahoo hotjobs search!

Hi,

Forgot to add. Try nelson staffing and see if they might be able to help you with a temp job (www.nelsonstaffing.com) We use them for our contingency workers at work and they have a branch location in Fremont.

Good luck with the job search !

To all the Visajourney goers:

Thank you for all your replies to my questions.

Recently, I posted a topic "I have a job interview on Monday". Well I found out that it is a scam. When the receptionist called me, I didn't really hear the company name and didn't bother to ask because shes giving me a contact info as to where to go for my "interview" also she said she'll be sending me email to remind. So, i said to myself "ok i will know the name of the company when she sends the email"

I received an email Sunday night. The name of the company is VECTOR MARKETING (you can search it up in google and find many complains about them). They are associated with Cutco Cutlery company (i don't know if you have heard of it). They tell you there is no telemarketing, no cold calls and no experience required (they provide the training). So i went to their website and yes there is a training for 3 days.... but it is not paid!

They also make you buy a knives from them (you sell knives door to door) but they tell you it is a deposit. I think the knife is about $150 before you can start your job. They also have a mandatory meetings every weekend. All in all... they make you buy their knives and training is unpaid.

I think nowadays it is very hard to find a job but I am not giving up. I applied for different companies and have not received anything so far. Those who contacted me are either scam or very strong sales. I am wondering somehow if my experience in the Philippines is not helping at all?

I only worked for a year in Teletech as a technical support. You know how it works in a call center. You have a different supervisor every 2 weeks. I have encountered a lot of companies testing website who don't have an option for international location and numbers (can't proceed if you don't fill it up)

Now I feel like putting my experience in the Philippines will not help me at all. -sigh- I could use some advice. Thank you!

I am not yet there in US, hopefully soon. But I did apply in some companies there though I stated that I am currently in K1 petition. Some response and called my fiance's home phone for my interview. For several times, all the companies didn't send me emails, they called and introduce their selves as HR officer, and gave you time for interview. My fiance said it's not their type there to email interview appointment, they only called you.

I don't mess around with no name websites when buying airline tickets. You can open up a website and advertise to sell anything on the Web for only a few dollars per month.

...

I always use American Express Travel, and Customer Service is excellent with them.

I always fly PAL in PI, I don't take an American Carrier like American or NorthWest.

Reason is: If I need to change flights or re schedule (Which usually happens when I am in PI), there are PAL offices located all over PI.

If you fly an American Carrier in PI and try to call them from PI to re schedule a flight, it can be a major pain.

Most employer in USA will not know what K1 Petition is.

You would be best served to wait until you arrive in USA and have EAD card or GC before looking for work

In USA once a Phone Call is made to a canidate, A job offer usually follows very quickly, Like same day or within a few days.

I agree with your Husband, Email Job Interviews are not the way things are done. A phone call is next step in the job hunt process.

its really luck i tried craigslist. but as i said we almost got scammed twice about the money order encashing thing. I got my 2 jobs there though one is bleachbright product consultant and lastly AT&T Technical Support also in craigslist. Try newspaper or walk- in .. (hotels, hospital etc. and valid company names website "careers/jobs" or you can try staffing office" (F)

I agree with tallcoolone. Most employers in the USA dont know K1 visa.

Before i left the philippines, my previous US manager was already looking for a job opening for me here in the US. He wants to ensure that i have job once i arrived here. I had to explain to him that i still have to wait for my EAD before i could apply for job.
