Well... does it bear asking why $1bn of stimulus money needed to be allocated to pandemic provision?

Surely there are provisions already in place for dealing with major disease outbreaks..

Why was it necessary to spend stimulus money on this?

I would like to see the mans question answered please. Sounds like a reasonable one to ask.

They can't answer. The whole point of the hater threads is simply to poke fun. Libs won, but they are still spectacularly angry.

I would like to see the mans question answered please. Sounds like a reasonable one to ask.

Rep. David Obey (D-WI) included the pandemic preparation funding in the package because he believed "that a pandemic hitting in the midst of an economic downturn could turn a recession into something far worse."

...

Gary, shouldn't it go without saying that if we had a pandemic happen right now, it would further cripple our economy? If Napolitano closes the border to Mexico, does anyone have any idea how much that would cost us in lost revenue?

That isn't the point. Funds for this should have been included in the general budget. The stimulus bill was for jump starting the economy. Please tell me how this would have "stimulated" the economy.

That money was going to be spent on emergency preparation - jobs, vaccines, research into making vaccines, etc.

Steven, I'd like to know how come you think the government has the power to control the border for the flu, but it's impossible to do that for illegals crossing.

I never said that. However, closing off the border to all commercial exports and imports to and from Mexico alone would severely cripple our already battered economy.

So by that reasoning just about anything is "stimulus". Nice to know.

In general, that was the idea behind the stimulus. It's just a matter of what kind of spending is worthy or not. For pandemic preparation, I submit to you that it was worthy. It's unfortunate that the Dems made concessions with Republicans and allowed them to cut it.

If this disease turns into the modern equivalent of the Black Death, we might have justification for allocating $1bn of public money to it.

As it is though - I think its pretty questionable to attach it to the stimulus. I'm not sure I understand the thinking that a worldwide pandemic is more likely to occur during a recession. Seems like pretty thin reasoning to me.

I'm not sure I understand how it was "unfortunate" that it was cut. There's no evidence that this money will be needed to deal with the Swine Flu outbreak, or why the current budget provisions already assigned to the CDC are somehow insufficient to deal with it.

Are you serious? You are, aren't you?

Mexico exported US$198.3 billion worth of merchandise to the United States in 2006, up 16.5% from 2005 and up 47.3% in just 4 years.

Mexican imports from the U.S. rose 11.5% to $134.2 billion in 2006, up 37.6% since 2002.
